IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows what Anthropology graduates from one university did after finishing their undergraduate degree course. The table shows the salaries of the anthropologists in work after five years.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparison where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart and table demonstrate the employments and associated salaries of the recent anthropology passout students from a university respectively.

Overall, this can be seen from the graph that maximum number of students almost 52% are working as full time, while only 12% are unemployed. Similarly, the table summarizes the maximum number of students about 50% working in a government sector with a salary of $100,000 plus, while other professions like freelance consultants and private companies have 40% and 30% of total graduates working in this salary range respectively.

The maximum number of students about 52% are working as full-time, followed by part-time workers 15%, full time post-graduate students 8%, and part-time workers plus post-grad study 5%. Surprisingly, only 12% are unemployed while professions of 8% are unknown.

The table illustrates the salaries of 50% of anthropology graduates are highest approximately $100,000 in a government sector followed by 40% freelance consultants and 30% private companies' workers. If we take a look at lowest salaries ranging from $25,000 to $49,999, the most of workers are from private company while freelance and government sector hold equal percentage of 5%. In between these, 40% of freelance consultants are earning $75000 to 99,999 while 35% of private companies' workers having a salary of $50,000 to 74,999.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both parts of the task and identify the main destination pattern: full-time work is the largest category at 52%, while unemployment is 12%. You also compare the highest salary band across the three employment types and note useful contrasts in the lowest band. These accurate selections support a clear overview. To make the account more complete, include the 8% whose destination is unknown in the overview or explain that the remaining graduates are spread across smaller categories. Some table details are under-developed: for example, you mention the 40% of freelance consultants earning $75,000–$99,999, but omit the government-sector figure of 30% in that band. The response is relevant and mostly accurate, with some comparisons needing fuller coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on graduate destinations and a final paragraph on salaries. This makes the two visual elements easy to identify, and phrases such as “followed by” and “If we take a look” help signal comparisons. However, the overview repeats information that is then restated in the body, particularly the 52% full-time figure and the highest salary-band figures. Some links are mechanical, and the final paragraph moves between salary bands without a fully systematic progression. Organise the body into clearer comparisons—for example, report all salary bands for each employment type, or compare each band across sectors—and reduce repetition to create smoother progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “unemployed,” “freelance consultants,” “salary range” and “followed by,” so the main information is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “illustrates” and “summarizes.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “employments” is not natural here, “passout students” is unsuitable, and “professions of 8% are unknown” does not clearly describe the category. “Maximum number of students” is also repeated where “largest proportion” would be more precise. Aim for consistent, natural terms such as “graduates,” “employment destinations” and “the proportion earning.” These refinements would improve precision and reduce repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple statements and more complex structures, including the contrast introduced by “while” and the conditional phrase “If we take a look at…”. Most sentences communicate the intended comparisons, and the response is not difficult to follow. Some grammatical errors remain, especially with articles, agreement and sentence construction. For example, “the maximum number of students … are working” has a mismatch between the singular subject and verb, while “working in a government sector” needs a more appropriate article or phrasing. In “35% of private companies’ workers having a salary,” the clause lacks a finite verb. Review subject–verb agreement and ensure each sentence has a complete main clause; these corrections would make your varied sentence forms more controlled.
