IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?
Student answer (Band 8.5)
In many societies, children are encouraged to believe that they can accomplish anything as long as they work hard enough. This message can inspire confidence and determination, but it may also create unrealistic expectations. Therefore, while this belief has several important benefits, it also carries certain disadvantages.
On the one hand, teaching children that hard work leads to success can have a positive impact on their personal development. First, it encourages perseverance and resilience. When children believe that effort can help them overcome difficulties, they are more likely to keep trying instead of giving up after failure. As a result, they develop a growth mindset, which is essential for both academic and professional success. Second, this message motivates children to set ambitious goals and work diligently to achieve them. Many successful athletes, scientists, and entrepreneurs have reached remarkable achievements because they remained committed despite numerous setbacks.
On the other hand, telling children that they can achieve anything through effort alone may lead to disappointment and frustration. In reality, success is influenced by many factors besides hard work, such as natural ability, financial resources, educational opportunities, and even luck. For example, a child may dream of becoming a professional athlete but may be limited by physical characteristics or health conditions. If children are taught that effort is the only factor that matters, they may blame themselves entirely when they fail, leading to stress, low self-esteem, or anxiety. Furthermore, this belief may cause them to overlook the importance of making realistic decisions and adapting their goals when circumstances change.
In conclusion, encouraging children to believe in the power of hard work can foster determination, resilience, and ambition. However, it is equally important to teach them that success depends on a combination of effort, opportunity, and individual circumstances. By maintaining a balanced perspective, children can remain motivated while developing realistic expectations about life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly identified both the advantages (resilience, motivation, growth mindset) and the disadvantages (unrealistic expectations, potential for self-blame, ignoring external factors). The position is clear from the introduction and is maintained consistently throughout the essay. Each paragraph provides relevant, well-developed arguments supported by logical explanations and examples. The conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points, offering a balanced perspective. The response is well-structured and directly answers the question asked, demonstrating a strong grasp of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the advantages and disadvantages is smooth, signaled by effective cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. The use of linking words like 'Furthermore', 'As a result', and 'In conclusion' helps guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The flow is natural, and the relationship between sentences is clear, meeting the criteria for a high band score in this category.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic context. Phrases such as 'growth mindset', 'remained committed', 'physical characteristics', and 'balanced perspective' show a level of sophistication. The word choice is precise and contributes to the clarity of your arguments. While the vocabulary is effective and accurate, it could be slightly more ambitious to reach the highest band, perhaps by incorporating more nuanced collocations or idiomatic academic expressions. However, the current range is more than sufficient to convey your ideas clearly and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5
The essay displays a high level of grammatical control. You use a variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('if they try hard enough', 'if children are taught') and subordinate clauses, which are handled accurately. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are virtually no grammatical errors. The sentences are well-constructed, and the overall accuracy is very high. The range of structures is sufficient to support the development of your arguments, and the writing is consistently error-free, which is characteristic of a high-level performance.
