IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?

Student answer (Band 8.5)

In many societies, children are encouraged to believe that persistence alone guarantees success. While this belief can foster valuable qualities, it also carries certain risks if taken too literally.

One clear benefit of this message is that it builds resilience and motivation. Children who believe that effort leads to improvement are more likely to persevere when faced with setbacks, rather than giving up at the first sign of difficulty. This mindset, often referred to as a "growth mindset" by psychologists, encourages young people to take on challenges, such as learning a new skill or subject, that they might otherwise avoid out of fear of failure. In this sense, the message can be a powerful tool for building confidence and a strong work ethic from an early age.

However, this message also has significant drawbacks. Firstly, it is not entirely accurate, since factors such as natural talent, financial resources, and social circumstances often play a decisive role in what a person can achieve. When children eventually recognize this gap between what they were told and what they observe in reality, they may become disillusioned. Secondly, and perhaps more seriously, this belief can lead children to blame themselves excessively when they fail, assuming that any lack of success simply means they did not try hard enough. This can cause unnecessary anxiety and damage self-esteem, particularly in competitive academic or sporting environments.

In conclusion, while telling children that hard work can help them achieve their goals is valuable for building determination, presenting this as an absolute truth risks setting unrealistic expectations. A more balanced message, one that values effort while acknowledging external factors, would better prepare children for both success and disappointment.
