IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?

Student answer (Band 8.5)

In many societies, children are encouraged to believe that they can accomplish anything they want if they work hard enough. While this message can motivate young people to pursue their goals with determination, it may also create unrealistic expectations and lead to disappointment when success is influenced by factors beyond their control.

On the one hand, teaching children that hard work leads to success has several important benefits. First, it encourages them to develop perseverance and a strong work ethic. Children who believe that effort is rewarded are more likely to overcome difficulties instead of giving up when faced with challenges. For example, a student who struggles with mathematics may improve significantly through consistent practice and determination. Moreover, this belief helps children build self-confidence and a positive attitude towards learning, which can contribute to long-term academic and professional success.

On the other hand, telling children that they can achieve absolutely anything through hard work alone may have negative consequences. In reality, success often depends on factors such as natural ability, financial resources, health, and opportunities. If children are taught that effort is the only requirement for success, they may blame themselves when they fail despite working hard. This can result in frustration, low self-esteem, and unnecessary stress. Furthermore, some goals may simply be unrealistic for certain individuals, regardless of how much effort they make.

In conclusion, encouraging children to work hard is undoubtedly beneficial because it promotes resilience, confidence, and ambition. However, it is equally important to teach them that while effort greatly increases the chances of success, external circumstances and individual differences also play a significant role. A balanced message can help children remain motivated while developing realistic expectations about life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task. You have clearly identified both the advantages (perseverance, self-confidence) and the disadvantages (unrealistic expectations, potential for low self-esteem) of the message. Your position is consistent throughout, and the ideas are well-developed with relevant examples, such as the student struggling with mathematics. The conclusion effectively synthesizes the arguments and provides a nuanced final thought. The response is well-structured and directly answers the prompt, demonstrating a clear understanding of the requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the transition between the advantages and disadvantages is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore'. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct points. The flow of information is natural, and the relationship between ideas is easy to follow throughout the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words.

Lexical Resource — Band 8.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic context. Phrases like 'unrealistic expectations', 'natural ability', and 'external circumstances' show a level of precision and sophistication. The word choice is generally accurate and natural. While the vocabulary is effective, it could be elevated slightly further to reach the highest band by incorporating more idiomatic or less common collocations. However, the current range is more than sufficient to convey your ideas clearly and precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5

The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'While this message can motivate... it may also create...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense usage is excellent. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a high level of accuracy, fitting well within the criteria for a high band score.
