IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?
Student answer (Band 8.0)
In many societies, children are raised with the belief that perseverance can lead to the fulfillment of any goal. While this encouraging message fosters resilience and motivation, it can also set unrealistic expectations and lead to severe emotional distress when failure occurs.
On the positive side, telling children that effort guarantees success instills a strong work ethic and self-belief from a young age. When young people believe their abilities can expand through dedication—a mindset often referred to as a growth mindset—they are far more likely to take on challenges, persist through academic difficulties, and develop self-discipline. This attitude empowers children to aim high, explore their potential, and overcome socio-economic or personal barriers that might otherwise limit their aspirations.
However, this message has significant drawbacks if taken literally. It oversimplifies reality by ignoring external circumstances, such as systemic inequalities, socio-economic status, and natural limitations in talent or health. When children who have worked tirelessly fail to achieve a goal, they may unfairly blame themselves rather than recognizing these external constraints. This self-blame often results in feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and depression. Furthermore, pushing children to believe that endless effort guarantees victory can lead to burnout, as they may struggle to accept when it is healthier to adjust their goals or pursue alternative paths.
In conclusion, encouraging children to work hard promotes determination and self-assurance, which are crucial for personal development. Nevertheless, adults must balance this encouragement with realistic guidance, teaching children that while effort is essential, failure is a natural part of life that does not reflect a lack of worth or endeavor.

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the advantages and disadvantages is smooth, using effective signposting language such as 'On the positive side' and 'However'. Cohesive devices are used naturally and accurately, such as 'Furthermore' and 'nevertheless', which help to guide the reader through the argument. Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
You demonstrate a wide and sophisticated range of vocabulary, which is used with precision and natural control. Phrases such as 'fulfillment of any goal', 'systemic inequalities', 'external constraints', and 'personal development' show a high level of lexical flexibility.
