IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?
Student answer (Band 8.0)
In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they work hard enough. This message can motivate children to make an effort and believe in themselves, but it can also create unrealistic expectations. This essay will discuss both the advantages and disadvantages of this idea.
One major advantage is that this message can encourage children to work harder. When children believe that their efforts can help them achieve their goals, they may become more confident and willing to face difficulties. For example, a student who is not good at mathematics may continue practising instead of giving up after getting low marks. It can also teach children important qualities such as patience, determination and responsibility. These qualities can be useful in both their studies and future careers.
However, there are also some disadvantages. The biggest problem is that children may start believing that hard work is the only factor that determines success. In reality, success can also depend on opportunities, financial conditions, natural abilities and sometimes luck. If a child works very hard but still fails to achieve a particular goal, they may feel disappointed or believe that they are not good enough. This can put unnecessary pressure on them. For instance, a child may study for many hours to become a professional athlete, but physical ability and other circumstances also play an important role.
In my opinion, children should be encouraged to work hard, but they should also understand that effort does not guarantee success in every situation. Parents and teachers should teach them to learn from failure and choose realistic goals.
In conclusion, telling children that they can achieve anything through hard work can build confidence and determination, but it may also create unrealistic expectations. Therefore, this message should be given in a balanced way.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly identified both the advantages (motivation, confidence, resilience) and the disadvantages (unrealistic expectations, pressure, potential for disappointment). Your position is consistent throughout the essay, and the ideas are well-developed with relevant examples, such as the student struggling with mathematics or the aspiring athlete. The conclusion effectively synthesizes your arguments and provides a balanced final thought. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the discussion by exploring the long-term psychological impact of these expectations in more depth, but the current development is sufficient for a high score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the advantages and disadvantages is smooth, using appropriate linking words like 'However' and 'In reality'. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'For example', 'In my opinion', and 'Therefore', which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the response. The structure is coherent and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a high band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'unrealistic expectations', 'natural abilities', and 'guarantee success' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is appropriate and natural, it is generally standard. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common collocations and idiomatic expressions, such as 'mitigate the risk of disillusionment' or 'intrinsic aptitude'. However, your current word choice is precise and there are no errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use conditional sentences ('If a child works very hard but still fails...') and relative clauses effectively. The grammar is highly accurate, with very few errors. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and the sentence construction is varied enough to maintain interest. The control over complex structures is solid, and the writing is clear and error-free for the vast majority of the text, which is characteristic of a high-level performance.
