IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In this time every thing is happening very fast and quickly. if we look at past then we can notice that they were living without any resources. the life was spent very simply by them. our forefather does not have any features or internet to operate.

if we see their lives and differentiate with ours then we can see that our live have all type of resources and surrounded with so many facility. in addition we have to taught our child that how to decisions by theirself. the method should be followed by child. further more parent would be know with all thing that is going in current time so they can inform their baby how to connect with world. thought my perspective if a child work hard and pushes is limit to reach at his desire then hu should do it and there is nothing that can't be achieve by human. infinite power was given to human by god. for that we have to push our limit and work hard.

if a culture suggest this to a child then this is a very effective thing for that because they can achieve their goals and become what ere they want to be in their life so this is advantage for that student. if he truly want that and have desire for that then they definetly do that.

but sometime it becomes a burden for them and they can't face that reality. they face sevarle dieases, anxiety and take so much stress so it effect on their body.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both advantages and disadvantages, but the development is inconsistent. The introduction is largely irrelevant, focusing on historical comparisons rather than the specific topic of children's beliefs. While the body paragraphs touch upon the benefits (achieving goals) and drawbacks (stress and anxiety), the arguments lack depth and specific examples. The position is somewhat clear, but the lack of a cohesive argument structure makes it difficult to follow. To improve, ensure that every sentence directly relates to the prompt and provides concrete support for the claims made.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The transition from the historical context in the first paragraph to the main topic is abrupt and confusing. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'in addition' and 'further more', but they are often applied mechanically or incorrectly. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly with pronouns like 'they' and 'it', which makes it difficult to track the subject matter. The overall structure lacks a clear introduction and conclusion, which hinders the flow of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'differentiate with ours' instead of 'compare with ours' and 'know with all thing' instead of 'be aware of everything'. The student relies on basic vocabulary and struggles to express complex ideas precisely. Spelling errors, such as 'sevarle' and 'dieases', are present, though they do not entirely impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary and focus on accurate collocations and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that affect readability. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('our forefather does not have', 'parent would be know'), article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, and the use of complex structures is limited and often inaccurate. For example, 'how to decisions by theirself' is grammatically incorrect. While the meaning is generally discernible, the high frequency of errors in basic sentence construction prevents the essay from reaching a higher band score.
