IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In different parts of the world, younger generations are often reminded that in order to obtain success, it must be with great determination. This message can be viewed in two different perspectives. Children develop the positive attitude of hard work and discipline however it could lead them to pressure and exhaustion. That being said, this essay will determine the advantages and disadvantages of this message.

On one hand, hard work and determination are keys to fulfill dreams. This means that such skills are the vehicle to achieve future goals. For instance, if a child is determined to face obstacle despite hardships and puts effort or regulation on every task, one can promote a sense of strong character to defy odds.

On the other hand, feeling pressured and exhausted could brought detrimental effects to the young ones. In other words, if the body do not have limitations to complete a job, it might cause a person to be mentally drained. For example, applying too much effort that leads the mind to force finishing a work, yet your body do not cooperate then, it could significantly affect both the mental and physical aspects of life. Similarly, this might contribute as your weakness which may develop in the coming years.

In my opinion, both views have positive and negative effects on young minds. However, they are still vulnerable at their age. Meaning to say, consider the factors that would help build their foundation so that whey approach adulthood they will be ready to face different challenges. By teaching them in the right way without pressure, these kids will have a better future ahead.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of telling children they can achieve anything with hard work. A clear position is established and maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and supported, although some of the explanations could be developed further with more specific examples. For instance, the paragraph on disadvantages touches upon feeling pressured and exhausted, but phrases like 'if the body do not have limitations' remain slightly vague in their development. Overall, the response meets the core requirements of Task Achievement, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each side, and a concluding opinion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to signal transitions, such as 'On one hand' and 'On the other hand', though some linking and referencing feel slightly mechanical or repetitive ('Meaning to say'). Progression is generally evident, but occasional awkward phrasing in transitions slightly disrupts the natural flow of ideas. This performance fits comfortably within Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'determination', 'exhaustion', and 'vulnerable'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'could brought detrimental effects' (instead of 'could bring') and 'force finishing a work'. Spelling and word formation are generally acceptable and do not impede communication, but these errors in precision prevent the response from reaching a higher band, placing it securely at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambition with conditional structures like 'if a child is determined...' and 'if the body do not have limitations...'. However, grammatical errors are frequent, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('if the body do not', 'your body do not cooperate') and pronoun consistency ('one can promote... yet your body'). While these errors do not severely impede communication, they are persistent enough to cap the score at Band 5.0.
