IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

I think you are right due to some specific effects. I will write here about advantages and disadvantages at the same time. In most of cultures people keep pushing child's to learn something that would be skillful with your studies and after that kind of hard works they will achieve whatever they wanted in their life.

Advantages could be he will be serious about their lifestyle and decision whatever they will take for future. Their parents will not worried about their future and present . If we keep giving them this advise that you should workhard for your life then he will definitely struggle in his or her life .And later they will not regret about anything.

Disadvantages could be if we keep forcing them to struggle may be they get frustrated and exhausted and will feel low self esteem not due to you forcing them but because if they are not interested they will not participate in thue perceptive tasks. He will walk away from you and may be you lost them and never find out where they have been gone.

Conclusion is that we should be neutral in any decision whatever we are taking. We should give them freedom to decide what they wants in their life may be they Don't have interest in academic but may have in any skill and passion. So we should support them in their every way of life. Then may be whatever they decide it could be easy for us and for their future

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of telling children they can achieve anything. A clear position is established by the conclusion, which argues for a balanced approach. However, the development of ideas is limited and somewhat superficial. For example, the advantage is briefly stated as being 'serious about their lifestyle' and parents not worrying, while the disadvantage touches upon frustration and low self-esteem. While the main parts of the prompt are addressed, the arguments lack depth and clear extension, which keeps the response within the Band 5 descriptor range.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs reflecting an introduction, body paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions, informal conversational framing ('I will write here about...'), and confusing referencing. For instance, the pronoun shifts ('he will be serious', 'their lifestyle', 'his or her life') make it difficult to follow the subject being discussed. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes inaccurate, resulting in a somewhat fragmented structure overall.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors in word choice and collocation. Examples include 'keep pushing child's' instead of children, 'workhard', and 'thue perceptive tasks'. Phrasing such as 'may be you lost them and never find out where they have been gone' demonstrates a limited lexical range and grammatical control that causes some strain for the reader. While the language is minimally adequate to convey the basic message, it falls short of Band 6 due to frequent lexical inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The response shows a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or faulty complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies, incorrect verb forms ('parents will not worried', 'if they are not interested they will not participate'), and punctuation issues. These errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader in understanding the precise meaning, aligning the performance closely with the Band 4 and 5 descriptors.
