IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is observed in many beliefs that teenagers are frequently told that they are capable of achieving almost anything in their lives if they work hard, as Hardwork is the key to success. This essay tends to analyse the pros and cons of delivering this message to the children, including my iclinations in the ensuing paragraphs.
Examinig the brighter side of the statement which includes that with strong hardwork, children are able to achieve almost anythig in their life. People think so because it is a strong belief in many cultures that hardwork is the key to success, as children who really work hard would definitely, be able to achieve their respective goals in life. The foremost advantage of this is that it boost the motivation of the children and enables them to focus more on their life goals with strong determination and dedication. Moreover, it builds strong resilience and helps the children to learn from their mistakes and enhance their confidence level for their long-term success. Hence, by telling children, that with the help of hardwork, anything can be achieved, is the best way to boost their confidence and its a great way of encouraging the children.
On the contrary, there are some darker sides, as well. Telling children that if they try hard enough, they will achieve anything in their life, might create immense pressure on some children.Children may blame themselves, if they will fail even after strong hardwork, it can cause severe impact on their mental abilities. Therefore, telling children that hardwork is the only key to achieve anything in life can be quite, insignificant.
To conclude, there are both merits as well as demerits of telling children that they can achieve almost anything in their live with hard work. However, I personally believe that its more advantageous because it provides encouragement and strong motivation to an individual and also builds strong resilience which helps children to face even the difficulties of life, easily

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of telling children they can achieve anything with hard work. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay and reiterated in the conclusion. Ideas are extended and supported, such as when discussing the positive impacts on motivation and resilience, as well as the potential negative pressure on mental health. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise slightly, and some arguments could have been pushed further with concrete examples to reach the highest bands. Overall, the task is successfully fulfilled, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are presented coherently with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing both sides, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Hence', 'On the contrary', and 'To conclude' are used to connect ideas, though some referencing and punctuation choices are slightly mechanical or faulty, such as comma splices ('...telling children, that with the help...'). Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the introduction, advantages, disadvantages, and conclusion, earning a solid Band 6.5 to 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempts less common items such as 'resilience', 'determination', 'immense pressure', and 'insignificant'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'iclinations' (inclinations), 'Examinig' (Examining), 'anythig' (anything), 'boost' (boosts), and awkward phrasing like 'severe impact on their mental abilities'. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6, as control over less common vocabulary lacks full precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation inaccuracies, such as unnecessary commas ('...definitely, be able to...', '...quite, insignificant') and subject-verb agreement slips ('...its a great way...'). While the complex structures are generally understandable, the frequency of errors prevents the grammar score from reaching Band 7. The control is characteristic of a Band 6, where errors occasionally occur but rarely impede overall communication.
