IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years , the elders people amd many individuals told sometimes that they can acquire anything they manifest or want if they try hard enough .This essay will discuss the both sides opining in details and draw a conclusion.

On the first hand , one major advantages is that this message can motivate children to continue their work in hard or easy situation. When young people belive that their efforts can lead to success , they are more likely to remain persistent when facing difficulties. For example , a student who struggle with mathematics may continue practising rather than giving up because they believe that improvement is possible through effort. In addition , this attitude can help children develop important qualities such as self-discipline ,determination and perseverance , which can be valuable in their future education and careers. It can also increase their confidence because they learn to focus on what they can control , namely their own effort.

On the other hand , however, telling children that they can achieve anything if they simply try hard enough can also have negative consequencess. The main problem is that sucess doesn't depend on entirely on effort . Factors such as financial circumstances , natural abilities , opportunities and support from others can also influence a person achievements.Consequently , children may feel disappointed or blame themselves when they work extremely hard but still fail to reach a particular goal .Furthermore ,this belief may encourage some childre3n to overwork themselves and neglect their helath , sleep or relationships .For instant , a student might spend excessive time studying because they think that failure means they have not worked hard enough.

In conclusion, encouraging children to work hard can make motivated , confident and persistent.Nevertheless , they should be taught that effort is only one factor contributing to sucess that failure is a normal part of life .Therefore , children should be encouraged to try their best while maintaining realistic expectations and a healthy balance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of telling children they can achieve anything. The position is clear throughout, and the main ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as a student struggling with mathematics or overworking. However, some ideas border on over-generalisation and could have been developed with a slightly higher degree of nuance to reach the higher bands. Overall, the task is properly addressed and the requirements of Task 2 are fully met, earning a solid Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with distinct introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as "On the first hand," "In addition," and "On the other hand, however," although some connectors display slight mechanical usage or minor awkwardness in phrasing. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression guides the reader smoothly through the arguments, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, attempting less common items such as "perseverance," "circumstances," and "consequencess." However, there are noticeable spelling errors ("amd", "opining", "consequencess", "helath", "sucess", "childre3n", "for instant") and occasional awkward word choices ("the elders people", "tell sometimes"). While communication is never impeded, these inaccuracies prevent the lexical score from reaching Band 7.0, placing it firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures effectively. There are, however, frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly involving subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., "the elders people amd many individuals told sometimes", "success doesn't depend on entirely on effort"). Punctuation spacing issues also occur frequently around commas. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the error-free sentence frequency, positioning the response at a Band 6.0.
