IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
As I recently passed my childhood time and I learnt some precious words during this age.The most important statement that I learnt is that one should do every thing if one could try hard.According to my point of view nothing is imposible if we want to do it and we give our full attention to it and could not lose hope.
In some cultures, people told there children that they can achieve anthing if they try hard enough.I think it is compulsuary to parents to told this necessary to their childs, because a child had not much experience of life and as parents are the first teacher of the child so they can told them their life experience. In the time of childhood childs can create there mindset according to the things or words they saw or listen. If parents told him good and positive things the childs had a positive and best mindset by which they struggles in their lives.
If children have a mindset according to that they can achieve everything by trying hard enough,so they can achieve their goals easily and hopefully. They can do things that are insane for them and they couldnot lose hope in any situation.
This is clear that there are too many advantages of giving children this kind of message but I think if children can think everything is possible so there is danger of that any child can participate in the activity that is impossible and waste the child time.It is best that we told children that they can achieve things by trying hard if they are possible instead of everything.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of telling children they can achieve anything. The student attempts to establish a clear position, stating that it builds a positive mindset and helps achieve goals easily, while also acknowledging the disadvantage that it might lead to wasted time on impossible tasks. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on the advantages heavily relies on the idea of a 'positive mindset' without expanding into broader psychological or practical implications. Similarly, the counterargument is briefly touched upon rather than thoroughly explored. This places the response comfortably at Band 5.0, as it addresses the task and presents relevant ideas, but the support and extension remain under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into four paragraphs, reflecting an introduction, body paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward referencing and a lack of smooth transitions between sentences. For example, expressions like 'As I recently passed my childhood time' create an abrupt opening that does not effectively bridge into the core prompt. Cohesive devices are minimal, and referencing words such as 'he', 'him', and 'their' are frequently confused (e.g., 'told there children', 'childs had a positive'). Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is weak, resulting in a somewhat fragmented reading experience. These features align with the Band 5 descriptor, where organisation is present but overall progression is lacking.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive throughout the essay. The student frequently recycles words like 'child', 'children', 'childs', 'mindset', and 'try hard'. There are numerous word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'compulsuary', 'anthing', 'imoposite', and 'there' instead of 'their'. While the student attempts some less common phrases like 'insane for them' and 'lose hope', the frequent lexical errors and limited range restrict the score. The errors do not entirely impede communication, as the reader can still grasp the general meaning, fitting the Band 5 descriptor where vocabulary is limited and noticeable errors occur.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. The majority of sentences are simple or awkwardly constructed complex sentences that frequently contain errors. Examples of grammatical inaccuracies include 'It is compulsuary to parents to told this', 'a child had not much experience', and 'if children can think everything is possible so there is danger'. Subject-verb agreement errors, incorrect preposition usage, and tense inconsistencies appear throughout the text. Complex structures are attempted, but they are often faulty and require effort from the reader to untangle. This corresponds closely to Band 5, where frequent errors in grammar and punctuation can cause difficulty for the reader.
