IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Early age education of the children is practiced everywhere in the world. When children start to develop concious, their mind become curious to the all of the things that are happening in their surroundings. Resultantly, schools are the best place to help them learn about these things in a gradual manner.

The thinking process plays the vital role in shaping their values and personality ultimately. When a child is told, since early age, that they can achieve everything, it means to give them wings to fly later. A budding mind grasps the early age attitudes and sees everything through that lens.

A positive image created since beginning helps in realizing big dreams. They become determined and confident of their decisions and make life choices accordingly. A prominent figure, Hellen Keller was blind in the childhood. She was not getting education as the ordinary children her age. But with the help of Ms. Sullivan, she did not either got a degree but was also appointed as a professor at esteemed university. The presence of her teacher with positive attidtude and the sense of accomplishmnet led her to be light of hope for people with diability.

On the other hand, reminding children too much of their goals and pressuring them to try harder can leave negative impacts. They loose their true selves or competitive advantage by being stuck on the same issue. This further leads to inferiority complexes and psychological disorder. They become sensitive to their surroundings and feel pressured. Narowing down their options further increases the peer pressure.

In a nutshell, children are the delicate flowers who bloom in their own way, at their own speed. All they need is right direction in right manner. They shuld be taught about the various matters in mutiple ways ans should also taught to embrace failure. As both win and failure are part of life, and there is nothing wrong in it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of telling children they can achieve anything. A position is presented, and relevant ideas are brought forward, such as increased confidence, realizing big dreams, and the potential negative impacts like pressure and psychological disorders. However, the development of these ideas is sometimes limited and uneven. For instance, the introductory paragraph focuses heavily on general education rather than the specific prompt. The example of Hellen Keller contains factual inaccuracies regarding her academic appointments and includes minor narrative digressions. Nevertheless, all parts of the task are covered with a clear overall stance, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs addressing advantages and disadvantages respectively, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes. However, cohesion at the sentence level is sometimes faulty or mechanical. Transition phrases and referencing show occasional awkwardness, such as in the abrupt shift into the Helen Keller example without a clear cohesive link. Transitional markers like 'Resultantly' and 'In a nutshell' are used, but referencing pronouns like 'they' and 'their' occasionally lack clear antecedents, causing minor confusion about whether the writer is referring to children, parents, or educators.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common items such as 'budding mind', 'psychological disorder', and 'peer pressure'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, such as 'concious' instead of conscious, 'mutiple' instead of multiple, and 'attidtude' instead of attitude. Collocations are sometimes unnatural, as seen in phrases like 'did not either got a degree'. These errors occur with some frequency, but they do not impede overall communication, which places the vocabulary performance squarely within Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the essay. There are instances of effective complex structures, such as 'When a child is told, since early age, that they can achieve everything, it means to give them wings to fly later.' However, grammatical errors and awkward phrasing are frequent, including missing articles ('as the ordinary children', 'with positive attidtude'), incorrect verb forms ('mind become', 'did not either got'), and subject-verb agreement issues. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but errors in grammar and morphology persist across the response, making Band 5 descriptors most appropriate for this criterion.
