IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Children are the roots of every developing society. It is claimed that in several cultures the message are given to children, by working hard they can achieve anything. This statement have both pros and cons which I discuss in detail.
To begin, with pros of this statement , there are many advantages of giving hard working message to children. At first by conveing this message the become able to work hard from very young age to achieve their dreams. For instance if a child dream is to buy a car, the parents advice that by working hard he can achieve it, so parents introduces a path which led to achieve his ambitions.Secondly he become regular and punctual in his daily routine after the message he recieved from his culture. Although the child who grown in his own culture reflects the image of beign punctual and hard work.
In contrast, there are also cons of this statement. To begin with drawbacks of this message first of all they are not able to work hard in their young ages because of physically weakness of doing hardwork. Additionally this message can make burden on their growing young mind because they concenrate on studeis so if culture asks to workhard it can be negative effects on health. Moreover they cannot do anything, that they desires.
To conclude, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough, this statement have negative impacts, so in my opinion this type of cultures should not give this type of message to avoid any disturbance regarding child future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of telling children they can achieve anything. A position is presented, stating that the message has negative impacts and should be avoided. However, the development of ideas is limited and sometimes unclear. For instance, the discussion of the disadvantages mentions physical weakness and burdens on young minds studying, but these points are underdeveloped and lack logical extension. The arguments tend to overgeneralise, such as claiming children cannot do anything they desire. Overall, the task is addressed, but the depth of ideas falls into the Band 5 category, where arguments are somewhat limited and under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is organised into four paragraphs with a clear introduction and conclusion. However, progression and cohesion are hindered by mechanical and repetitive use of cohesive devices, such as 'To begin, with pros...', 'At first...', and 'Secondly'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within the body paragraphs is occasionally faulty, leading to abrupt transitions. Referencing is also unclear in places, such as when pronouns like 'they' and 'it' refer back to ambiguous antecedents. The overall arrangement shows some organisation, but the management of cohesive devices aligns best with Band 5 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on simple words like 'message', 'culture', 'work hard', and 'child'. There are noticeable errors in word formation and choice, such as 'conveing' instead of conveying, 'physically weakness' instead of physical weakness, and 'beign' instead of being. These inaccuracies and the limited range of vocabulary mean the lexical resource is minimally adequate for the task, fitting the Band 5 descriptor where noticeable errors can cause some difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the message are given', 'this statement have', 'he become'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'although the child who grown in his own culture reflects the image of beign punctual'). Punctuation is also erratic in places. Because frequent errors persist and attempts at complex structures are often faulty, causing difficulty for the reader, this performance corresponds to a Band 5.
