IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Yes it is true In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough to pursue their goals they will definitely. It always depends on their hard work and dedication towards their work. Their is no such thing in this world that is not achievable if you work hard everything is possible.
Let me talk about the advantages If you taught your children's from early age and forced them to work hard so they will gain more confident and you will see the massive improvement in their personality yourself gradually and you will see the discipline in yourself. The things will be more easier for them in the longer run in their life.
If i discuss some disadvantages so the biggest flaw is that in early age children's are not fully mature if parents forced them to do the hard work so they may get under pressure and their are many chances they get faced stress, anxiety from the early age and that is not good for their health and causes many illness problem into their life. because children's are sensitive they can absorb the limited pressure, If parents over pressurise them, The result is they do nothing valuable in their life.
In my opinion, Parents should thought the children that do your best but not overload to their self and hard work is important but for them personal grooming and physical activities is also important. Parents should focus on all areas not just focused to hard work. For future if they want their children's to rise a good human being and want to get them successful in their life. They should have to focused on all aspect in their personality development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of telling children they can achieve anything. A position is presented, though it is somewhat informally stated. The ideas are relevant, mentioning increased confidence and discipline as benefits, and stress or anxiety as drawbacks. However, these ideas tend to be repetitive and lack full development with specific supporting examples or academic elaboration. For instance, the discussion on disadvantages mentions children getting under pressure and facing stress, but stops short of exploring the long-term psychological implications in depth. Furthermore, grammatical errors sometimes obscure the precise meaning of the arguments. Consequently, the response fits the profile of Band 5, as the task is addressed, but the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays some overall organization with recognizable paragraph breaks separating the introduction, advantages, disadvantages, and conclusion. However, the logical progression between sentences is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions, run-on structures, and confusing referencing. Phrases like 'Let me talk about the advantages' and 'If i discuss some disadvantages' are rather conversational and intrusive, rather than naturally cohesive. Furthermore, referencing is unclear in places, such as when pronouns shift or when the link between sentences becomes muddled due to punctuation issues. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is faulty and mechanical. This places the response firmly at Band 5, reflecting basic organizational structure combined with inadequate and repetitive cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'dedication', 'personality development', and 'personal grooming', but these are often undermined by frequent word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'causes many illness problem' and 'overload to their self'. Repetition of basic terms like 'hard work', 'children', and 'parents' is prominent throughout the text. Word formation and spelling errors, such as 'thought' instead of 'teach' or 'forced' instead of 'force', occur frequently and sometimes cause slight difficulty for the reader. The vocabulary range is sufficient to convey a basic message, but the frequent inaccuracies prevent it from reaching a higher band, aligning with the Band 5 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and poorly connected clauses. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, characterized by run-on sentences, comma splices, and incorrect verb tenses or forms. Examples include 'If you taught your children's from early age and forced them to work hard so they will gain more confident...' and 'Their is no such thing in this world that is not achievable...'. Errors in subject-verb agreement, pluralization ('children's'), and prepositions occur in almost every sentence. While some simple sentences are correct, the high frequency of grammatical errors causes noticeable difficulty and strain for the reader, matching the standard set for Band 4.
