IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Yes, it is true In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard to get enough to pursue their goals. It always depends on their hard work and dedication towards their work. Their is no such task in this world that is not achievable if you work hard everything is possible.

Let me discussed about the advantages If you taught your children's from early age and forced them to work hard so they will gain more confident from young age and you will see the massive improvement in their personality grooming, they will be more organised and discipline in their daily life and for future the things will be more easier for them in the longer run of their life.

In contrast, if i discuss some disadvantages so the biggest flaw is that in early age children's are not mature enough, if parents forced them to do the hard work so they may get under pressure and the possibilities increased that may get face stress and anxiety from the young age and that is not good for their health and caused them frequent illness and medical problems into their life. because children's are sensitive they can absorb the limited pressure, If parents over pressurise them, The result is they do nothing valuable in their life.

In my opinion, Parents should thought the children's that do your best but not overload yourself and hard work is important but personal grooming and physical activities is also important. Parents should focused on all areas not just reply towards hard work. For future if they want their children's to rise a good human being and want to get them successful in their life's. They should have to focused on all aspect in their personality development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of telling children they can achieve anything. A clear position is presented, arguing that while hard work builds confidence and discipline, excessive pressure can lead to stress, anxiety, and illness. Ideas are generally relevant, but the development is somewhat limited and repetitive, particularly in the discussion of disadvantages. The conclusion also introduces a slightly muddled summary. Overall, the response fulfills the core requirements of the task but tends to over-generalize, which places it firmly in the Band 6 category according to the official descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, providing a recognizable overall arrangement with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, progression is sometimes hindered by repetitive phrasing and weak logical transitions (e.g., 'Let me discussed about the advantages' and 'In contrast, if i discuss some disadvantages'). Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion can be mechanical or faulty, and referencing is occasionally unclear. While the reader can follow the overall flow of arguments without severe difficulty, the organizational control lacks the flexibility and clarity required for a Band 7.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express basic ideas about hard work, stress, and personality development. However, the range is limited, and there are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'personality grooming' instead of personal development, 'forced them to do the hard work', and 'rise a good human being' instead of raise. Spelling errors and awkward phrasing appear throughout the text. These errors do not entirely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('if parents forced them to do the hard work so they may get under pressure'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak, featuring frequent errors in tense consistency, subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'children's are sensitive'), and punctuation. Run-on sentences and comma splices are common, and attempts at complex structures frequently result in faulty syntax. While meaning remains generally accessible, the high frequency of errors prevents the grammar from achieving a Band 6.
