IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In few cultures childrens are regularly told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. It has both advantages and disadvantages.
First of all we will discuss about the advantages, if childs are frequently told that they can achieve anything if they try hard then they start putting efforts to get success and try everything to get succeed in their life. For example if a student is motivated daily to do hardwork he will start doing efforts to get good results and at the end he will get reward.
Another advantage is that If childrens are motivated frequently they became goal oriented. A good example of this is that If parents guide their child that they can get everything if they put efforts then childrens start putting effort in every single work and slowly they can achieve their desired goal in life.
A disadvantage of this is that all childrens do not have same capability some of them are sharp and some have weak minds. If one of the child get success and other doesnot he got demotivated and ruin his life. For an instance if parents motivate their student that with hardwork he can get everything but after too much hard work he cannot achieve anything he will get depressed. So parents or culture shoukd show both positive and negative aspects of hardwork.
In conclusion, I think if childrens are motivated to achieve their goals with hardwork it has more advantages and postive aspects than disadvantages in their life .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address both advantages and disadvantages and give a clear overall view that the benefits are greater. The examples about a student working for good results and a child pursuing a goal are relevant, but they largely repeat the idea that effort leads to success rather than explaining how the message benefits children. The disadvantage is also asserted rather than fully explored: the claim that a child who does not succeed may “ruin his life” needs a more realistic explanation and support. The response is 232 words, below the 250-word minimum; the 21 words copied from the task prompt are not counted. Develop each side with more specific reasoning and a fuller example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and a disadvantage, and a conclusion. This makes the main points easy to identify. However, progression within paragraphs is limited, and several ideas repeat the same claim about effort and achieving goals. Linking phrases such as “First of all,” “Another advantage,” and “In conclusion” help signal stages, but the repeated “For example” and “if” constructions make the connections feel mechanical. Some references are also unclear, particularly “he got demotivated” after discussing children generally. Build each paragraph around one distinct point, explain it step by step, and use clearer references and a wider range of transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “motivated,” “goal oriented,” “desired goal,” and “hard work.” However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, especially “efforts,” “achieve,” and “success.” There are also noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems, such as “get succeed,” “weak minds,” “doesnot,” and “postive.” These sometimes make the meaning less natural or precise, even though the general message remains understandable. Aim for more accurate combinations and varied wording; for example, describe children as having different abilities rather than “sharp” or having “weak minds,” and use “achieve success” instead of “get succeed.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including conditional structures such as “if parents motivate their student … he can get everything.” However, the range is limited, and complex sentences often contain errors that make the reader pause. Examples include “In few cultures,” “if childs,” “they became goal oriented,” and “all childrens do not have same capability,” which show problems with articles, plurals, and subject–verb agreement. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also inconsistent: the opening of the first body paragraph joins an introductory phrase and a new clause with a comma. Practise accurate sentence patterns, especially plural subjects and verb forms, and separate clauses with appropriate punctuation.
