IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many cultures in the world parents motivate their children by saying "noting is impossible in life" and they can achieve anything if they work hard for it. This approach has many advantages and disadvantages. I believe that although this practice have some setbacks but advantages are far more than disadvantages.

All parents want their children to become successful in life. Most of the cultures especially in South Asia and Africa parents start training their kids from childhood for gaining higher goals in life. In order to keep their child's morale high they ensure them that they can acheive anything in the future if they work hard.

On the one hand, this practice has many advantages. This help children gaining their educational goals by keeping them confident. Moreover, this approach is beneficial as it keeps the younger generation busy in productive activities and developing usefull skills. Furthermore, most of the children who have higher aims in their lives ultimately florish in their career and achieve financial stability.

On the other hand, sometimes this approach may be distressing for the kids if they met failures due to bad luck or other factors. Likewise, giving children false hopes may result in disappointment and emotional instability.

In conclusion, parents should motivate their children for better future and try them to believe themselves but at the same time should prepare them for resilience if some expectations are not met. In addition, overstressing to acheive goals should be avoided. Similarly, importance of peace of mind and work-life balance should be given prime importance while raising younger generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both the advantages and disadvantages and give a clear overall view: “advantages are far more than disadvantages.” Relevant benefits include confidence, productive activity and career prospects, while the drawbacks include disappointment and emotional instability. This covers the task well, but the ideas are not equally developed. For example, the claim that children with high aims “ultimately florish” and achieve financial stability is broad and would be stronger with an explanation or example of how the message helps them. The disadvantages are also stated briefly, without showing how parents can distinguish encouragement from unrealistic promises. Your conclusion adds useful qualifications about resilience and balance; developing these points in the body would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining the context, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the organisation explicit. Within the advantages paragraph, “Moreover” and “Furthermore” help sequence supporting points. To make cohesion more flexible and less formulaic, connect ideas through their meaning as well as through transition words. For instance, explain how confidence leads to persistence or skill development, rather than presenting these as separate benefits. The second paragraph also repeats the introductory idea about parents’ encouragement; it could more directly preview the specific benefits discussed next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “productive activities,” “financial stability,” “emotional instability,” “resilience,” and “work-life balance.” These choices help communicate the main points, but the range and control are uneven, with noticeable spelling and word-choice errors. Examples include “noting” for “nothing,” “acheive,” “usefull,” and “florish”; these reduce the accuracy and polish of the writing. Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “keep their child’s morale high” and “overstressing to achieve goals.” Aim for precise, natural collocations and check spelling carefully. Replacing broad phrases such as “better future” with more specific language would also help you express the effects of encouragement more precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex structures, including the conditional idea “if they work hard” and the contrast introduced by “although.” The overall meaning remains clear, but some errors in agreement, verb forms and sentence construction limit accuracy. For example, “This help children gaining” needs a singular/plural agreement correction and a different verb pattern; “if they met failures” uses an unsuitable verb form and construction; and “this practice have” does not agree in number. The opening sentence also combines several ideas in a way that makes its structure difficult to control. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and the patterns that follow verbs such as “help,” “try,” and “ensure.” More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response.
