IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is an old saying that;Hard work can overcome talent. It can take to there where somtimes talent can't.Cultures are playing role in formation of children identity. It provokes us to do toil for our dreams to be true.Such teaching can establish strong mindset in childs who avoids shortcut in their lives.
It have a lot of prons with minor cons.First and foremost,it brings sense of struggle and strenght in youngers. They starts beliving that only potential can bring success to them and there is no shortcut .For instance, Ronaldo who is a great football player, once said in his interview that hard work can beat talent with addition of consistency. His journey is really inspiring for the youth .
The last but not the least that it makes younger think that if they don't have skills or talent there is still a way to break the cycle of failure. It provides them hope and courage to meet their desires. For instance the child can overcome his saluggish nature through practise and determination.
This concept also holds some drawbacks like it can detrack the mentality of a talented student. He may start assuming that his talent is useless and can't take him to the highest point of success his future.Every talent is worthy but if it is polished and get combined with hard work it is unbeatable.
To conclude ,every cultural has certain norms some of them are to followed and few of them are to be questioned.Education basically means question your stereotype surrounding and look for the reality. This teaching of hard work is essential component of live but talent also takes part equally in achieving certain goals

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both sides of the question and give a clear overall view: the message can build perseverance and hope, but may lead a talented child to undervalue their abilities. The examples about Ronaldo and a child overcoming a lack of motivation help make the advantages relevant. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the possible effect on a talented student is mentioned, but you could clarify how this belief might affect their confidence or choices. The conclusion introduces a broader point about questioning cultural norms, which is not fully connected to your discussion. Develop each advantage and disadvantage with a clearer explanation of its consequences.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate discussion of advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. The progression from perseverance to hope and then to a possible drawback is generally easy to follow. You also use signposting such as “First and foremost” and “For instance.” At times, however, these devices feel formulaic, and some links between ideas are unclear. The opening moves quickly from a saying about hard work to culture and identity without explaining the connection. The final paragraph also shifts to education and stereotypes rather than directly synthesising the points. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to the claim it supports.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of relevant vocabulary, including “mindset,” “determination,” “potential,” and “consistency,” and the main ideas remain understandable. There are also some less successful word choices and collocations that reduce precision, such as “formation of children identity,” “brings sense of struggle,” and “detrack the mentality.” Spelling and word-form errors, including “somtimes,” “strenght,” and “beliving,” are noticeable and make the writing less polished. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than using ambitious wording where the meaning is uncertain. For example, describe the message as building perseverance or resilience, and explain that it may cause a child to undervalue their talent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use both short statements and some longer sentences, including conditional structures such as “if they don’t have skills or talent there is still a way.” However, control is uneven, and errors in agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence construction sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “It have a lot,” “They starts,” and “a talented student” followed by “his future” in a sentence whose structure is difficult to follow. Punctuation also needs attention: the opening has a semicolon joined directly to the next word, and several sentences lack spaces after commas. Practise building accurate complex sentences, checking subject–verb agreement, and separating complete ideas with appropriate punctuation.
