IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some people belives that some culture states children that they can grasp anything if they try hard. while, other belives this can misguide childrean. I partially belives that child can able to archive anything if they can try hard enough to archive it. while, it also need the proper path and destinguise between what thing is moral and ethical ways.

One of the main advantage is that in current genration people are lacking the confidence and motivation. this can give that motivation to the child to work on that things which they need to archive in their future life. For Instance, contempory there is a peak recession time and people lossing there jobs and career. while, on the other hand people are getting higher pays which is hard to archive. if child able to grasp work hard type characteristic, than it can able to archive that figures. also, child always lure towards upscaling them selves for better opportunities.

On the contrary, this idea is missleading to the child. because child was not able to distinguise between good things and bad things. while, it can be happen that if there is no one to teach them virtues and values than, child can lure toword the bad things. For Instance, Now a days theft and fraud are increased drastically in country. so, it might be a reason that some child learn to work toward archive something. but, there is no one who can teach them essential moral ethics and values.

In conclusion, I personally belives that this teach them constantly work on them selves. however there is essential to teach them a virtues and values. so, they can not lure towards bad things.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both sides of the question and give a clear, qualified position: hard work can help children achieve goals, but they also need guidance about ethical behaviour. The confidence and motivation point is relevant, and the discussion of children pursuing goals without moral guidance gives a disadvantage. However, some support is unclear or only loosely connected to the message in the prompt. For example, the references to recession, higher pay and rising theft do not clearly show how telling children they can achieve anything causes these outcomes. Develop each point with a direct explanation or a specific, plausible example, and make the advantages and disadvantages equally clear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for an advantage, one for a disadvantage, and a conclusion. This helps the reader follow the main direction of your argument. However, links between ideas are sometimes mechanical or confusing. Repeated use of “while,” “also,” and “for instance” does not always show the relationship accurately; for example, “while, on the other hand” introduces a contrast without a clear connection to the preceding point. Some references, such as “that figures” and “it,” are also unclear. Use fewer, more precise linking expressions and ensure each example is explicitly tied to the claim it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “confidence,” “motivation,” “opportunities,” and “virtues and values.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice problems sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow, as in “archive” for “achieve,” “lure” for “lead,” and “contempory” for “contemporary.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “grasp work hard type characteristic” and “higher pays.” These issues limit the clarity and flexibility of your vocabulary. Build accuracy with common topic collocations first—for example, “work hard,” “pursue goals,” and “make ethical choices”—then use less common terms only when you are confident they fit.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You try to use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including conditional ideas such as “if there is no one to teach them…” and contrast between advantages and disadvantages. However, errors in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement, articles and punctuation are frequent enough to make some sentences difficult to understand. For example, “I partially belives that child can able to archive” combines an incorrect verb form with an unnecessary “able,” while “this can give that motivation to the child” has an unclear grammatical structure. Practise building accurate subject–verb–object sentences, then add subordinate clauses. Check agreement and verb forms, and avoid joining sentence fragments with commas.
