IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough. What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some parts of the world, kids are motivated that they can do anything if they are willing to put due efforts. This essay will discuss positive and negative aspects of this statement and will come to a logical solution.

Many parents believe that children should be given free will to do whatever they what to do. They motivate their children by telling that they can do anything in the world, they can become whatever they want to be. These statments help children to put more efforts into their work and also makes their imaginations and dreams limitless, which makes them able to do new inventions and make positive changes in the world. It gives children motivation that people believe in them. It is evident that children who are pushed that they can do anything, are more creative and makes better decisions in professional lives.

On the other side, there are some drawbacks like, children are at a stage of life where they do not undrstand basic difference between good and bad and when they are given confidence of doing whatever they want often lead to disastrious ends. Kids can easily built false asumptions about certian things without taking in considration many practical aspects of the world and when they put their efforts in wrong direction and do not succeed they can become mentally stressed, as in their mind there is nothing that they cannot do. A study in University of California showed that almost 23% of kids who believed that their ideas were achieveable and they were putting so much efforts into them, their ideas were based on fictional cartoons.

In conclusion, there is no doubt that kids should be motivated to achieve milestones and make new discoveries but they should be taught to understand the practical limitations of the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both advantages and disadvantages and gives a relevant overall position: children should be encouraged, but also taught about practical limits. The benefits are supported with ideas about motivation, imagination and creativity, while the risks include unrealistic beliefs and stress after failure. This meets the task well, though some points are more fully explained than others. For example, the claim that encouraged children “make better decisions in professional lives” is asserted rather than explained, and the study example about cartoon-based ideas is not clearly connected to the broader consequences. To strengthen the response further, explain how each example demonstrates the effect of this message and develop the balance between encouragement and realistic guidance more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion that restates the central position. Transitions such as “On the other side” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument, and the ideas generally progress logically within each paragraph. However, some linking is mechanical, and several long sentences combine multiple claims without showing their relationships clearly. The sentence beginning “Kids can easily build false assumptions” moves from assumptions to effort, failure and stress in one chain, making the reasoning harder to track. The opening also promises a “logical solution,” although the essay mainly presents a concluding recommendation. Use clearer sentence boundaries and more precise referencing to make the progression smoother and less dependent on formulaic transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is adequate vocabulary for discussing the topic, including “motivation,” “creative,” “practical limitations,” and “mentally stressed.” The response also attempts more specific expressions such as “positive changes” and “fictional cartoons,” and the intended meaning is generally clear. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, including “motivated that,” “put due efforts,” and “confidence of doing whatever they want.” Spelling errors such as “statments,” “undrstand,” “disastrious,” and “achieveable” also reduce control. Aim for more natural combinations and check spelling carefully; for instance, describe children as being “encouraged to believe” something and refer to “making an effort” rather than “putting efforts.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including relative clauses and conditional relationships, as in “when they put their efforts in the wrong direction and do not succeed.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in longer constructions. For example, “These statements help children … and also makes” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “when they are given confidence … often lead” lacks a clear grammatical subject for “lead.” The sentence about the University of California study is also difficult to parse because its clauses do not fit together cleanly. Improve control by checking agreement, ensuring each clause has a clear subject, and dividing sentences that contain several linked ideas. More consistently accurate complex sentences would make the argument easier to read.
