Student answer (Band 6.5)

In many countries around the world, people from rural areas are moving to the cities, so the population in the countryside is decreasing. I think it as a negative development.

Rural and urban areas and the people living there both contribute to the development and economy of any country. Rural areas have their own contrubutions and urban have theirs own. If noticeable amount of people start moving into the cities it will definitely have some impact on the country as there will be an imbalance in the contributions of rural and urban people to the country.

Firstly if more people move into the cities there will be limitations of resources for the increased population. Basic needs like food, shelter, jobs will be challenged due to a rise in population. It will be a challenge for the government too to accomodate such a large population in one specific part of the country. There will be more competition in job opportunities as there will be more people applying for jobs. More food will be required to feed more people.

On the other hand if we discuss the rural areas being fled off by people it will also have adverse effects. Major agriculture of a country is powered by the rural areas which ultimately help the economy of the country. If there will decrease in the population in the rural areas then the agriculture will also be affected and country might start depending on importing crops and relying on foreign agriculture leading to economical crisis.

In conclusion, migration of people from rural areas to cities will crowd the cities leading to less resources for an increased population and in rural areas the agriculture might get hindered leading to economical losses.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that rural-to-urban migration is a negative development. The ideas are relevant, focusing on urban resource strain and the decline of agricultural productivity. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the point about 'limitations of resources' is mentioned but not deeply explored with specific examples or nuanced reasoning. While the task is addressed, the arguments remain at a general level, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, you should provide more specific evidence or illustrative examples to support your claims.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a clear progression of ideas, moving from urban challenges to rural agricultural impacts. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could be linked more fluidly to improve the overall flow. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the structure helps the reader follow your argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'agriculture', 'migration', and 'economical crisis'. However, there are some inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'fled off by people' and 'economical losses' (instead of 'economic'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and lacks the precision or sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I think it as a negative development' (missing 'is'), 'urban have theirs own' (incorrect pronoun usage), and 'If there will decrease' (missing 'be'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with missing commas after introductory phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage would significantly improve your accuracy.
