Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing both positive and negative developments regarding urbanisation. However, the position is only partially developed due to significant under-development of ideas. For example, the points about facilities, employment, and environmental issues are expressed as disjointed lists rather than fully expanded arguments. Furthermore, the response suffers from a critical length penalty: it contains only 179 words, falling well short of the mandatory 250-word minimum specified for Academic Task 2. This severely restricts the candidate's ability to present a fully developed response, leading to a lower band score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion, indicating a basic structural framework. However, overall progression is lacking, and ideas within paragraphs often feel disconnected due to fragmented sentences and poor logical sequencing, such as 'To explain higher paying jobs and easily find work.' Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes incorrectly, such as 'Firstly' used without proper corresponding transition markers or clear paragraph boundaries in terms of logical flow. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, and the conclusion is extremely truncated, failing to adequately summarise the main points.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with frequent spelling errors such as 'peolpe', 'decreasng', 'poplution', 'oppurtunies', 'speacialist', 'facilties', 'congection', and 'pollute'. While the student attempts some less common terms related to the topic (e.g., 'infrastructure strain', 'advanced healthcare'), the numerous lexical inaccuracies and spelling mistakes impede comprehension at times. The range of vocabulary is barely adequate to communicate the basic ideas of the prompt, restricting the lexical score to the lower bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and flawed complex attempts. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing verbs, incorrect prepositions, and fragmented clauses (e.g., 'It is true that regarding the peolpe are leaving the rural area decreasng the poplution and moving in urban areas' and 'there are much positive impact rather than negative like facilties are much in urban areas'). These frequent errors and poor sentence construction cause considerable difficulty for the reader and demonstrate weak control over basic grammatical forms.
