In many countries around the world, rural people are moving to cities, so the population in the countryside is decreasing.
Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
It would be negative development because they know about the agriculture and farming. Most of the people in city side do not no about it. The work that they people in city can not do. The work like dairy farm, chick farm, and other cannot do this. They have all the knowledge of vegetables that the city people can not do. They know about the the weather in which weather we can grow which type of vegetable we can grow. If they move to city and there are less people for farming and agriculture the price of vegetable and fruits will be increase and some time there will be shortage of these things. So that is also a drawback of this.
On the other side it would be yes, it is a positive development because many people do not have much knowledge about the study .They do not have much knowledge about the fashion about brands in these area, they prefer local things. They are 2 steps back from city people they. they do not know many places in city. They can not study high in village are they have to come to city area for higher study. And the people are living for many years are not graduated. Many people send there children to city for graduation. This is also the reason for people which are shifting to city from village. It is not bad thing which the people are moving to city, they know all the facilty are not provided to village area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both negative and positive aspects of rural depopulation, which shows an attempt to cover the task. However, the position is not always clear, and the ideas presented are limited and under-developed. For instance, the negative side mentions agricultural knowledge and potential price increases, but these points are expressed in a repetitive and overly simplistic manner without proper extension. Similarly, the positive side touches upon access to education and lifestyle differences, but these arguments remain vague and lack concrete examples. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to present a well-developed position throughout the essay, supporting each main idea with clear explanations and relevant details rather than jumping between disjointed points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation in the essay, evident in the division into opposing viewpoints, but there is no clear overall progression from introduction to conclusion. The response lacks an introductory and concluding paragraph, which disrupts the flow of the argument. Cohesive devices are sometimes inadequate or repetitive, as seen with phrases like 'The work like...' and 'On the other side it would be yes'. Paragraphing is attempted by separating the negative and positive aspects, but the internal logical links between sentences are frequently faulty, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of thought easily. Improving overall structure and using a wider range of accurate cohesive devices would greatly enhance the clarity of the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer relies heavily on basic and repetitive words, such as 'people', 'city', 'village', and 'know', which restricts the range of expression. There are noticeable lexical errors, including word choice and collocation issues like 'chick farm' instead of 'poultry farm', 'city side', and 'study high' instead of 'higher education'. While the meaning can generally be understood despite these constraints, the frequent errors and lack of less common lexical items prevent the response from achieving a higher score. Incorporating more precise vocabulary and accurate word forms would significantly elevate the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writing displays a very limited range of sentence structures, consisting mostly of simple and frequently faulty sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the price of vegetable and fruits will be increase'), article usage (e.g., 'in city side', 'to city'), plurals (e.g., 'all the facilty'), and awkward verb forms or tense choices (e.g., 'do not no', 'they people'). Attempts at more complex structures often result in errors that can cause difficulty for the reader and obscure the intended meaning. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical patterns and incorporate a wider mix of accurate sentence forms.
