Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this to express my interest for working at your house. I saw the advertisement in a local paper which suggested that you are in need of worker who can be available throughout the next summer.
I remember that you hate cooking and as far as I recall you loved food items which was prepared by me in the last summer. Thus, I will really appreciate if you provide me an opportunity to work for you.Additionally, I will help you in the gardening.
Currently, I am studying at the university and I have a long break in summer.I want to financially support my studies and it is a good chance to collect funds for my education.
I can work on weekdays from morning to afternoon. Though I will not be available on weekend.
Please, consider my request. I am hopping for a positivie response from your side. You can contact me at anytime to discuss this further.
Yours faithfully,
Shivani Panchal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three requested points: you offer cooking and gardening help, explain that you want to support your studies financially, and state that you can work on weekdays but not weekends. These are relevant and the purpose of the letter is clear. However, some details are less fully developed: “from morning to afternoon” gives a broad time window, and you do not specify any dates or other summer commitments. The reference to Mrs Barrett’s dislike of cooking and your previous food is useful personal context, but it could be connected more clearly to the help you are offering. Add a little more precise information about your experience and availability to make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce your interest, describe possible duties, explain your motivation, and finish with availability and a polite closing. Paragraphing helps separate these points, and linking expressions such as “Additionally” and “Though” make the relationships between ideas understandable. This coherent progression is a strength. At times, however, connections feel slightly mechanical or abrupt; for example, the move from recalling her food preferences to asking for the opportunity could be smoother. The availability sentence beginning “Though” is also not joined grammatically to a main clause. Use a more natural transition and connect related information within paragraphs to make the flow more seamless.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “advertisement,” “financially support,” “gardening,” and “available.” The personal reference to food prepared last summer also gives the letter some specific language. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “interest for working,” “in need of worker,” “food items,” and “collect funds.” Spelling errors in “hopping” and “positivie” are noticeable, and “at your house” is less suitable than a more natural phrase for domestic work. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and polish. Learn common collocations for expressing interest, offering household help, and explaining financial motivation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the relative clause “which suggested that you are in need” and the contrast introduced by “Though.” Most of the message remains understandable, and the main ideas are conveyed. Some grammatical errors persist, however: “you loved food items which was prepared” has an agreement error, while “I will really appreciate if” needs a more suitable verb form and clause structure. The sentence “Though I will not be available on weekend” is a dependent clause presented as a complete sentence. There are also article and punctuation problems, including “in need of worker” and missing spaces after full stops. Review agreement, articles, and how to form complete sentences with subordinating conjunctions.
