Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing this letter to express my interest to assist at your home on next summer.
I used to help my mom on household tasks from my early childhood.I will do everything like grocery shopping, cooking, gardening, cleaning outside and driving also.I can also solve electrical and sanitary issues as well.I have a good quality on conversation with English speaking people which help me out to meet anyone you want.
I am an University student and I need to arrange my tution fees by my own.During summer, we get a holiday for couple of days which provoked me to work more and earn extra for future. Also I found it feasible for me to work at your house on a single day.
I will be available after 2 pm from next month because I will do some extra course at my university in whole summer. On weekends specially sunday I used to do cycling with my friends and will not be able to work for the rest of the day.
I would be greatful if I get an opportunity to work with you.I am waiting for your response.
Yours sincerely,
Asif Iqbal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points in the prompt: you list household tasks you could do, explain that you want to earn money for tuition and the future, and give some availability details. The practical examples, such as shopping, cooking and gardening, make your offer relevant. However, some details are unclear or not fully developed. For example, “work at your house on a single day” does not explain which day, and your availability after 2 p.m. is difficult to reconcile with saying you can work only one day. Clarify the days and hours you can work, and explain more directly why this arrangement suits you. The letter is appropriately directed to Mrs Barrett and maintains a suitable purpose throughout; fuller, more precise details would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you introduce your interest, describe your skills, explain your motivation, and then discuss availability before closing. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these different points, and phrases such as “Also” and “because” show some awareness of linking ideas. At times, however, the progression within paragraphs is less smooth. The list of household tasks moves abruptly to your English conversation skills, and the availability paragraph combines a university course, weekend cycling and a single-day work preference without making their relationship clear. Use clearer transitions and organise the schedule information together—for example, state your available days and hours, then identify any exceptions. This would make the cohesion less mechanical and the overall message easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas and give a range of relevant examples, including “grocery shopping,” “gardening,” “electrical” issues and “tuition fees.” There are also attempts to express your purpose with phrases such as “express my interest” and “earn extra.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “interest to assist,” “on household tasks,” “a good quality on conversation,” and “provoked me to work.” Spelling and word-form errors such as “tution” and “greatful” also reduce accuracy. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding your main message, but they limit precision and naturalness. Focus on common collocations for offering help, describing skills and explaining motivation, and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including the reason clause in “I need to arrange my tuition fees by my own” and the time clause beginning “because I will do some extra course.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include the article and preposition pattern in “on next summer,” “an University student,” and “for couple of days,” as well as agreement in “which help me out.” The sentence about availability also shifts between future and habitual forms (“I used to do cycling … and will not be able”), making the schedule less clear. Review articles, subject–verb agreement and consistent tense, and punctuate sentence boundaries carefully; these corrections would improve control while preserving your varied sentence attempts.
