Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Mrs. Barrett,
I am writing this letter to you that I came across your advertisement seeking help at home next summer and I would love to offer my assistance.
I can help you with various household tasks including cleaning, cooking and organizing things. In addition, if you need help with grocery shopping , I would be happy to assist with those as well. Moreover, if you have garden then I can also take care of watering the plants and maintaining it.
I am fascinated in this job because I enjoy helping others and would love the opportunity to gain experience in home management. Furthermore, I plan to save money for my further studies; therefore, I would be really helpful for me.
I will be available from June to August and I can work from Monday to Friday in the afternoons. If my schedule works for you, I would be glad to discuss further details.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Manpreet Kaur

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined the household tasks you can assist with, provided a logical reason for wanting the job, and specified your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands exactly what you are offering. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'why' by connecting your personal skills more deeply to the specific needs of a household, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas effectively. The progression of information is logical, moving smoothly from your skills to your motivation and finally to your availability. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct topics. The flow is natural, and the letter is easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this task, such as 'assistance', 'maintaining', 'fascinated', and 'management'. There is a minor collocation error where you wrote 'I am fascinated in this job' instead of 'I am interested in this job' or 'I am fascinated by this opportunity'. However, this does not impede communication. The vocabulary is generally precise and fits the context of a job application well. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations related to employment or household management.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'I would be really helpful for me' (which should be 'it would be really helpful for me') and a slight issue with article usage ('if you have garden'). Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free and clear. Your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally strong, and the errors present do not cause any confusion for the reader.
