Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing this letter in regard to your advertisement for assistance with your household chores for the next summer.

Since I have been living by myself from last five years, I have become quite efficient in doing various household chores. Cooking different cuisines is one of my best skills, therefore, I can provide you aid in preparing your meals every day. Apart from this, being a healthcare professional, I am proficient with medications. So, helping with your medicines won't be an issue.

I'm willing to take this opportunity because I am planning to join university next year for my higher education. This would require me to collect enough funds; thus, working part-time would be a good idea. Moreover, as I am going to be free on next summers, I can definitely help you with your work.

During weekdays, I will be available in the evenings after 5 o'clock, however, on weekends there will be no time limitation. Hence, you can provide me the timetable according to your routine. My parents visit me on Sundays, so I will not be able to help you during that day.

I hope to hear from you soon. Do let me know if you any further queries?

Yours sincerely,

Manphool Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly outlined your skills (cooking and medication management), provided a logical reason for seeking the work (saving for university), and specified your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of the task. You have successfully covered all parts of the instructions, ensuring the reader understands exactly what you are offering and when you are available. The letter is well-structured and maintains a consistent, professional tone throughout, which is essential for this type of correspondence.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this', 'Moreover', and 'Hence' to connect your ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth, moving from your skills to your motivation and finally to your availability. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct topics. The referencing is clear, and the flow of the letter is natural, making it easy for the reader to follow your points without any confusion. The structure is coherent and supports the overall purpose of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. Phrases like 'efficient in doing various household chores', 'healthcare professional', and 'no time limitation' are used correctly. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for the task, there is room for more sophisticated or less common lexical items to reach the highest bands. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication. The language used is natural and fits the context of a job inquiry well, showing a good command of functional English.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are several error-free sentences, and your control of grammar is generally strong. However, there are a few minor slips, such as 'from last five years' (should be 'for the last five years') and 'on next summers' (should be 'next summer'). Additionally, the question 'Do let me know if you any further queries?' is grammatically incomplete as it lacks a verb. Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammatical control is sufficient to maintain a professional tone throughout the letter.
