Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs. Barrett,

I am Harsh Patel, and I am writing this letter to you to let you know that I have 7 years of experience in cooking, cleaning and all kind of daily routine work in any house.

I saw your advertisement in the newspaper that you need someone who can help you in the upcoming summer, that is the reason why I am here, as I said I can cook anything you like, as I have done my bachelor's in culinary. I can cook both, vegetarian and non-vegetarian.

Also, I would like to mention that I know all cleaning duties, including sweeping and mopping. I am sharing some reviews with this letter from my previous clients praising my work.

Here, I am leaving my availability, I am fully available all days of the week, between 8 am to 5 pm. but I will be not available after 5 pm.

Yours sincerely,

Harsh Paye

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain how you can help (cooking and cleaning), why you want the work (your experience and qualifications), and your availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on your motivation for wanting this specific role, perhaps by mentioning your interest in helping a local resident, which would make the letter feel more personalised and less like a generic list of skills.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'also' and 'as I said' to link ideas. However, the progression between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between your cooking skills and cleaning duties is a bit abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words or phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'In addition to my culinary skills') would improve the flow and help the reader follow your points more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'culinary', 'advertisement', and 'availability'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'all kind of daily routine work', which would be more naturally expressed as 'a variety of household tasks'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. Incorporating more specific collocations related to domestic help would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I will be not available' (should be 'I will not be available') and 'I can cook both, vegetarian and non-vegetarian' (the comma is unnecessary). Additionally, some sentences are slightly run-on, such as the second paragraph. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of sentence punctuation and auxiliary verb placement to reach a higher band.
