Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs. Barrett,

I hope this letter finds you in radiant health and best of spirits. I am writing this letter to respond an advertisement which you did in Yesterday's newspaper. As you are serching a helper who can help you in housechore activities for some hours a day next summer, I would like to grab this opportunity. I can help you in cooking, cleaning and gardning. I have a good cullinary skills so I can cook multi cusines dishes and I can back also. I can do plantation and take care of plants also because I had been working in public gardens for 2 years before my current job.

Currently, I am studying in Saskatoon University and a part time employee also. In summer season, I will get 3 months of summer vacation so I will be free during a day time. Therefore, I am searching for such type of work to utilise my liseaure time in productive thing and fortunately I found this advertisement. Moreover, this work would be a great financial help for my further study. I will be available at anytime between 8am to 3pm. After that I will be at my permenant work place. I will not be available for couple of days from June 30,2026 to July 4,2026 as I will be visiting Banff. If you required any additional information than I will be happy to provide you.

I am looking forward to hearing back from you positively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined how you can help (cooking, cleaning, gardening), explained your motivation (financial support for studies), and provided specific availability details, including your upcoming holiday. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your capabilities and constraints. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the task are covered with equal depth; your explanation of your gardening experience is a strong example of providing sufficient detail to support your claims.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'Currently' to link your ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your skills from your availability. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, ensure that the progression between sentences remains natural. For instance, the transition between your current studies and your summer availability is clear, but ensure that the connection between your gardening experience and your current job is more explicitly stated to enhance the overall logical flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'multi-cuisine', 'productive', and 'financial help'. However, there are several spelling errors (e.g., 'serching', 'housechore', 'cullinary', 'cusines', 'back' instead of 'bake', 'liseaure', 'permenant') that detract from the professional quality of the letter. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To achieve a higher score, focus on accurate spelling and using more precise collocations, such as 'culinary skills' rather than 'good culinary skills'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'If you required any additional information than I will be happy to provide you.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'respond an advertisement' (should be 'respond to'), 'which you did in Yesterday's newspaper' (should be 'placed'), and 'I will be free during a day time' (should be 'during the day'). There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors rarely impede the reader's understanding, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage.
