Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope you are doing good. I am writing this letter to express my excitement after reading the advertisement published by you that you need somebody to help you in your house.

I would be happy to help you with your household works such as laundry, gardening doing groceries and also in preparing some meals. Additionally, I would also be happy to help you with the gardening and some garage work too. As, I am hardworking and I also like to help other people so this would be an amazing opportunity for me.

Moreover, as I am looking for a part time work and also to earn some money while being free from studies. And, as far as it goes for my availability I am available on weekdays but not on weekends as I already have family commitment and also would not be available on second week of July as I have weeding to attend to.

Thank you for considering my application. I would be expecting your response and will be eager to hear back from you.

And, I would also be available anytime for face to face interview too if you do wants to give me the opportunity.

Yours Sincerely,

Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined the household tasks you can assist with, explained your motivation for seeking the work, and provided specific details regarding your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an individual. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could briefly elaborate on your experience with gardening or meal preparation to make your application more persuasive. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'As far as it goes', which help the reader follow your points. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by ensuring each paragraph focuses on a single, distinct idea. For example, the final sentence about the interview feels disconnected from the previous paragraph. Improving the flow between sentences would help achieve a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'advertisement', 'household works', 'commitment', and 'opportunity'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'weeding' instead of 'wedding' and 'doing groceries' which is slightly unnatural compared to 'grocery shopping'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and variety of less common lexical items that would characterize a higher band score. Focus on using more natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I am writing this letter to express my excitement after reading the advertisement published by you that you need somebody' (which is slightly clunky) and 'if you do wants to give me' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as starting sentences with 'And' or 'As'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and sentence variety will help.
