Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett

I am writing this letter in regards to you advertisement published in local newspaper last week on July-19-2026. As the advertisement does not specify any requirements, it was just mentioned you need daily help for few hours a day till next summer.

I am a professional cook, currently working in one the biggest chain of restaurants in our city. Usually i am free around 6PM to 7PM in evening from Monday to Friday. If you want I can help you in cooking your dinner these days and moreover I wont be charging anything from you.

I love my job, and if this job can help someone during there hard times I will be the happiest person in this world.

So i would request you to please let me know about you decision at the earliest, so that i can plan accordingly. Meanwhile i will try my best to help you during weekend as well.

Yours Sincerely

Sagar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: suggesting help, explaining the motivation, and detailing availability. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a stranger. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of why you want to do the work is quite brief and relies on a generic sentiment. To improve, you could expand on your passion for cooking or your desire to contribute to the local community in more detail. The response covers the requirements sufficiently to be considered a complete task, but further elaboration would elevate the quality of the content.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'moreover' and 'meanwhile' to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is slightly disjointed, and the flow between the introduction and the body could be smoother. Some transitions feel a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that transitions naturally into the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'professional cook' and 'advertisement'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'in regards to you advertisement' (should be 'your') and 'one the biggest chain' (should be 'one of the biggest chains'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and ensure consistent accuracy in your word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('in local newspaper'), incorrect pronoun usage ('there hard times' instead of 'their'), and punctuation issues (missing commas and inconsistent capitalization of 'i'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. Focusing on basic subject-verb agreement and proofreading for small errors like missing articles or incorrect pronouns will significantly improve your score.
