Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my interest in the part-time job which you have been advertised last week on The Tribune newspaper.

I believe, I am the best candidate for this job, as I have two years experience in the personal support field. I will help you in small household chores such as cleaning, laundry, and I am good in cooking food, so ocassionaly I could prepare healthy food for you. Apart from these, I have driving license, I will be able to buy grocery and assist you for any medical appointments.

I want this job, because I would like to help elder people, and this experience will be helpful for my future career if I want to pursue my career in the same field. In addtion, I also earn money while doing this job which would be beneficial for me.

My availabilties on the weekdays are 9 am to 2 pm and I am availble all day during weekends. On weekdays, I could not be available after 2pm due to my fitness classes.

Thank you for consideration my application. I look forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Parminder

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined how you could help (cleaning, cooking, driving), explained your motivation (gaining experience for your career and helping the elderly), and provided specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your offer and your constraints. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'why' by connecting your personal support experience more specifically to the needs of an elderly person, which would add more depth to your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Apart from these', 'In addition', and 'On weekdays' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. Overall, the structure is clear and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'candidate', 'household chores', and 'pursue my career'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'which you have been advertised' (should be 'which you advertised') and 'I have driving license' (should be 'I have a driving license'). Additionally, 'elder people' is better expressed as 'the elderly' or 'older people'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precision in your word usage to reach the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I believe I am the best candidate... as I have two years experience'. However, there are several grammatical slips, including missing articles ('I have driving license'), incorrect verb forms ('which you have been advertised'), and punctuation issues (the comma after 'I believe' is unnecessary). While these errors are frequent, they do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as well as refining your use of complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
