Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing to express my interest about your recent advertisement where you have mentioned about the need for someone to help you in your residence in summer.

I saw your advertisement in Indeed and while going through your post, I felt that I can be able to do the job you have mentioned as I have some experience in cleaning. I will be able to help you in deep cleaning and arranging the things in your house. As an international student, I was looking for job which would help me to pay my bills and it would be my pleasure as well to help you in cleaning your house.

I will be available on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and will not be available on Monday and Tuesday as my classes are scheduled on that days. Saturday and Sunday, I have to go to library and also have to do some groceries.

Thank you for your time and looking forward to hear from you as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely

Nya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly suggested how you could help (cleaning and organizing), explained your motivation (financial support as a student), and provided a clear schedule of your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. To improve, you could expand slightly on the specific tasks you are capable of, such as mentioning specific cleaning duties or organizational skills, to make your application more persuasive and fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which makes the information easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices like 'while', 'as', and 'and' to connect ideas. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider range of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'Regarding my availability') to improve the flow between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to complete the task effectively. You use relevant terms such as 'advertisement', 'residence', and 'scheduled'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'express my interest about' (should be 'in') and 'do the job' (a bit informal). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and slightly more sophisticated vocabulary to demonstrate a broader range of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I can be able to' (redundant), 'on that days' (should be 'those'), and 'looking forward to hear' (should be 'hearing'). There are also minor preposition errors. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of gerunds after phrases like 'look forward to'. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while ensuring accuracy will help raise your score.
