Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing you this letter to signify my interest on the House keeping Job you advertised recently.
I am a young lady in my early 30s who is physically and emotionally fit to handle domestic chores. Apart from keeping a home I am also a mother, and this means I have the necessary experience needed to take care of little children.
My family and I just relocated to the country and I am yet to get Licenced to practice as a Nurse.I am planning on applying for a caregiver Job later on and so getting this Job would give me more experience to be able to work in this country.
I will be free mostly in the mornings as my kids are usually with a family friend at that time. I can also do evenings during the weekends because my husband will be around to take care of the kids while I am away.
I hope to get a positive response from you.
Kind regards,
Omas Ometie

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: suggesting help, explaining the motivation, and detailing availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention being a mother as experience, you could have elaborated on specific tasks you are comfortable with, such as cooking, cleaning, or laundry. The explanation of availability is clear and logical. Overall, the response covers all requirements of the prompt effectively, though it lacks a degree of depth that would push it into the higher band range.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Apart from', 'and so', and 'because' to link your thoughts. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and simple. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words and phrases to create a smoother flow between sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the letter follows a standard formal structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'relocated', 'domestic chores', and 'signify my interest'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'Licenced' (capitalization) and 'caregiver Job' (unnecessary capitalization). The vocabulary is generally functional and clear, but it lacks the range of less common or more precise collocations that would be expected at a higher band level. The tone remains professional throughout, which is a strength.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing you this letter' (should be 'writing to you'), 'interest on' (should be 'interest in'), and 'Licenced' (spelling). Punctuation is generally correct, though there is a missing space after the period in 'Nurse.I'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures and ensuring consistent accuracy in prepositions would improve your score.
