Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I would like to apply for the job that you have posted in the newspaper. I read that you need a person who can help with the household chores for a few hours a day next summer.

I am a part-time college student who is pursuing a master's degree in applied science, and I am available four days a week in which I can help with your household chores. I am also familiar with all types of work, as I helped my mother when I was living back home.

Moreover, I would like to do this job because I want to learn the local language by communicating with your family. I can also help with picking up and dropping off your children from school.

I can come to work on weekdays, as my class starts in the evening, which I can also attend online, so it is perfect timing for helping you out.

Kind Regards,

Ronak Panchal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly suggest how you can help (household chores, childcare), explain your motivation (learning the language), and specify your availability (weekdays). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an employer. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the 'household chores' or the 'local language' to make the ideas feel more fully developed and personal. Overall, the response is relevant and covers all requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'as' to link ideas. However, the transitions between sentences could be more varied to improve the flow. For example, the final paragraph feels slightly disconnected from the previous one. Using a wider range of linking words or phrases would help the progression of ideas feel more natural and sophisticated, moving beyond simple additive connectors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'pursuing a master's degree' and 'household chores' correctly. The language is clear and appropriate for the context. To improve, try to incorporate more precise or less common vocabulary. For instance, instead of 'all types of work', you could use 'a variety of domestic tasks'. The current vocabulary is functional and accurate but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am a part-time college student who is pursuing...' and 'I can come to work on weekdays, as my class starts...'. While there are some minor awkward phrasings, such as 'four days a week in which I can help', the grammar is generally accurate and does not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, aim for more varied complex structures and ensure that punctuation is consistently used to enhance readability.
