Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing to obtain the opportunity that you advertised recently in a newspaper.
I have a number of years experience as a helper at homes, therefore I could help you in a cooking, cleaning and regular chores which could be troublesome for a one person to handle such as moving. I have a hand on experience of every skill, thus I believe it will be beneficial for you, if you consider me.
The main reason for applying this job is that I am new to in this country and I am a student of early childhood education. Therefore, I am looking for a part time work. Since the location of your house is near to my accommodation, it would not hinder my studies.
I am avilable at weekends for full day, however for weekday my timing would be limited because of my college. I could come after the afternoon till night in the weekdays. As this timing is for first month only, thereafter my summer vacations will start and I would be avilable for full day.
I look forward to heaing from you soon.
Kind regards,
Ripdaman Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined how you could help (cooking, cleaning, chores), explained your motivation (new to the country, student), and provided specific details regarding your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an acquaintance. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could briefly mention specific types of cooking or cleaning you excel at to make your application more persuasive. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'therefore', 'since', and 'however' to link your ideas. While the progression is clear, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are less mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of your letter, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. The structure is consistent and supports the overall purpose of the communication.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'hinder my studies' and 'obtain the opportunity' are used correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'a hand on experience' (should be 'hands-on experience') and 'applying this job' (should be 'applying for this job'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from being considered sophisticated. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that prepositions are used correctly with verbs.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'a cooking, cleaning and regular chores' (unnecessary article), 'a one person' (should be 'one person'), and 'new to in this country' (preposition error). Additionally, there are some spelling slips like 'avilable' and 'heaing'. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, focus on proofreading for small errors in articles, prepositions, and spelling, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures.
