Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

Good day to you madam. I am writing to you because I saw an advertisement at the coffee shop the previous day. The advertisement stated that you need someone to help in your home next summer. I do think I will be perfect for that job.

Two summers ago, I majored in home making at the local college. Hence, I have good expertise in taking good care of a home. I will help with making lunch for the family and I will also do the dusting.

I really love to work for because I am home for the next summer holiday and I can really use the distraction. I also need to save extra money for my tuition fee next fall.

If I am given the job, I will be available from Monday to Friday. On each day I will start by 9am and close by 3pm. Unfortunately, I will not be available in the evenings and during the weekend. I will need to help my mother in her shop on those occasions.

Thank you very much for your time, and I do hope to hear from you in due time

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain how you can help (cooking and dusting), provide a logical reason for wanting the job (saving for tuition and needing a distraction), and specify your availability (Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a prospective employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your qualifications and constraints. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail about your 'home making' skills to make your application more persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Hence', 'Also', and 'If I am given the job' to link your ideas effectively. The progression of information is clear and easy to follow. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases to move beyond simple connectors, which would help the flow feel more natural and sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'majored in home making' and 'expertise in taking good care of a home' are clear and relevant. However, some word choices are slightly repetitive or basic, such as 'good expertise' and 'do the dusting'. To improve, aim for more precise collocations and a broader range of vocabulary related to household tasks and professional communication. For instance, instead of 'I do think I will be perfect', you could use 'I believe I would be an ideal candidate'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate and easy to understand. There are minor errors, such as 'I really love to work for because' (missing an object) and 'I will start by 9am' (preposition error; 'at' is preferred). Additionally, 'the previous day' is slightly unnatural in this context; 'yesterday' or 'recently' would be better. Despite these minor slips, your control of grammar is generally good and does not impede communication.
