Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs. Barrett,

I am writing this letter to show my interest in the opening of home helper position that you advertise in the newspaper.

I am considering myself as suitable candidate since I have not only the previous work experience to do professional cleaning, but also certified as personal assistant. Thus, I am able to manage time properly and able to do all household tasks like deep cleaning, cooking and maintenance of backyards effortlessly.

I am highly interested in this opportunity as I am a student and planning to do a part-time job during the upcoming summer vacation that has flexible working-hours.

Although I am available for weekends only as your requirement, I am able to manage weekdays provided that we would decide in-advance my shift. Despite the open availability, I am not available to come early mornings since I have to go gym and follow fitness routine.

Thank you for considering me for this position. I look forward a prompt response.

Your Faithfully,

Ms. Manju

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: suggesting help, explaining the motivation, and detailing availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention cleaning and cooking, you could have elaborated slightly more on your specific skills to make the application more persuasive. The availability section is clear, though the phrasing regarding your gym routine is a bit informal for a job application. Overall, the task is fully addressed, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Thus', 'Although', and 'Despite', which help the flow of information. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To reach a higher band, ensure that the links between sentences are more natural and varied, rather than relying on standard transition words at the beginning of every sentence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'suitable candidate', 'professional cleaning', and 'prompt response'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'opening of home helper position' (should be 'opening for a home helper position') and 'go gym' (should be 'go to the gym'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding your use of collocations and more sophisticated professional terminology would improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'Although' and 'Despite' clauses. However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, including 'I am considering myself as suitable candidate' (should be 'I consider myself a suitable candidate') and 'we would decide in-advance my shift' (should be 'we decide on my shift in advance'). Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and prepositions. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
