Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I hope you are doing well, I just saw an advertisement that you need someone to assist you for this summer.

Moreover, I read that you need someone who can help you in household chores and as well as who can take care of your newborn baby. I can understand it is not easy for new mother to manage house works and responsibility of child. I can assist you in all household chores such as sweeping, mopping, laundry and cooking. Additionally, I can also take care of your newborn baby such as bathing, massaging and grooming.

Furthermore, I am a social worker, so it is my passion to help individuals. I would be free in next summer due to summer vacation so I can provide service for you.

As far as my availability, am available on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to assist you. please let me know further details and timing. I look forward for your prompt response.

Your sincerely,

Naina

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly outline the household and childcare tasks you can perform, explain your motivation as a social worker, and specify your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. To improve, ensure that the development of ideas is slightly more balanced; for instance, the explanation of your availability could be expanded to clarify why you are unavailable on other days, which would add depth to your response. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore' to link your points. However, the use of these connectors is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and use referencing more fluidly to connect sentences. Paragraphing is present, but the structure could be improved by separating the introduction, the body paragraphs (tasks, motivation, availability), and the closing more distinctly. The flow is generally smooth, and the reader can easily follow your message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'household chores', 'newborn baby', and 'social worker' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'manage house works' (should be 'manage housework') and 'provide service for you' (which sounds slightly unnatural; 'provide assistance' would be better). You attempt to use specific vocabulary related to the job, which is good. To improve, focus on more natural collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without any significant misunderstanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I can understand it is not easy for new mother to manage house works'. However, there are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('a new mother'), subject-verb agreement issues, and punctuation errors (e.g., comma splices in the first paragraph). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to articles and sentence boundaries. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
