Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope this letter finds you in best of health and spirit. I am writing in response to your advertisement for help in your home next summer.
I can help you out in your daily household chores like washing the dishes and doing the laundry as these are strenuous tasks and require a helping hand.
I'm particularly interested in this work as I have already worked in a few homes and I am well-equipped with the skills needed for helping people in their homes.
I am studying music in a school nearby which has a summer break scheduled in the academic planner which makes it convenient for me to offer my services to you. However, I have classes starting from spring and two semesters after my summer break. As these are full time classes so it will not be feasible for me to help you out in this time.
I hope to receive a positive reply from you

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting how you can help, explaining your motivation, and clarifying your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention you can help with chores, adding a specific example of your experience or a more detailed description of your skills would have made the response more persuasive. The explanation regarding your availability is clear, though the transition between your summer availability and your future academic commitments could be more smoothly integrated to ensure the reader fully understands your schedule.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph addressing a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'however' and 'as' to link ideas. To reach a higher band, you should aim for a greater variety of linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences is more fluid. Currently, some sentences feel slightly disconnected, and the paragraphing is functional but could be more sophisticated. Ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence to guide the reader through your points more effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'strenuous', 'well-equipped', and 'feasible'. These words are used correctly and help convey your meaning clearly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and repetitive phrasing. For example, 'best of health and spirit' is a slightly unnatural collocation. To improve, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to household management or professional communication. While your current vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your message without difficulty, expanding your range of collocations would elevate the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional-like structure in your explanation of your schedule. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'in best of health' (should be 'in the best of health') and 'in this time' (should be 'during this time'). Despite these occasional errors, your grammar does not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, focus on increasing the variety of your complex sentence structures and ensuring consistent control over articles and prepositions.
