IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Mrs Barrett, an English-speaking woman who lives in your town, has advertised for someone to help her in her home for a few hours a day next summer.
Write a letter to Mrs Barrett. In your letter

- explain when you will and will not be available
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing to offer a help to set-up your home in the next summer, as you have advertised about it in a local newspaper.
I would suggest to book an U-haul vehicle for the moving of heavy furniture, appliances and other home-decor items. Please try to pack all your small belongings in boxes for easy moving without any delays. More importantly, use bubble wrap or papers to pack all fragile items to mitigate any damage.
I have recent experience of moving my whole house to new apartment which made me feel like you to help you. As I have enjoyed all the work that I've done alone without any discomfort. Moreover, I've some tips of do's and don't for somethings, which could be helpful to you.
Make sure, I am only available during morning hours from 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM. So, make sure you can arrange all of these before that timings and I would be more helpful in your home set-up successfully.
Thanks and Let me know soon. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours Sincerely,
Marina Barron

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting how you can help, explaining your motivation, and stating your availability. However, the content is slightly misaligned with the task. The prompt asks for someone to help 'in her home,' which usually implies general household assistance, cleaning, or errands. You have interpreted this as 'moving house' or 'home set-up,' which is a specific task not necessarily implied by the prompt. While the ideas are relevant, the focus on U-hauls and packing boxes feels slightly off-target for a general home-help advertisement. To improve, ensure your suggestions align more closely with common household tasks.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing, and each paragraph addresses a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'So,' though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the connection between your experience of moving house and your desire to help Mrs. Barrett could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally effective, though the tone shifts slightly between the paragraphs. Overall, the structure is easy to follow and meets the requirements for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'mitigate,' 'appliances,' and 'discomfort.' However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'offer a help to set-up your home' (should be 'offer help setting up your home') and 'make sure you can arrange all of these before that timings' (should be 'before that time'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your range of natural collocations would help you reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. For example, 'I have recent experience of moving my whole house to new apartment' is missing articles ('a new apartment'). The phrase 'which made me feel like you to help you' is grammatically incorrect and confusing. Additionally, 'I've some tips of do's and don't for somethings' is awkward and contains punctuation errors. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these minor errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on article usage and subject-verb agreement.
