Dear Mrs Barrett,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing this letter in regards to your advertisement for house help. I would like to apply for this position.

As I have a experience of a few years working in the similar enviornment where I used to handle all the house chores such as weekly laundry, daily cleaning, cooking for family and gardening. Therefore, it will not take time for me to understand the work at your place. Due to some health concerns, last year I left my previous job and now I am looking for the opportunities where I can utilize my past skills.

I would be available alternative days of the week from morning 9am to 3pm. For weekends, I can come at anytime as my children send time with their grandparents at that time. I would not prefer to work on any holidays because of my personal commitments.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Yours faithfully,

Muskan Garg

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined how you could help (laundry, cleaning, cooking, gardening), explained your motivation (utilizing past skills after a break), and provided specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail on how your specific skills would benefit Mrs Barrett, perhaps by mentioning your attention to detail or efficiency, which would further develop your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a proper closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different points. You use some cohesive devices like 'Therefore' and 'As I have', though the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. For example, the transition between your experience and your availability is a bit abrupt. Overall, the message is easy to follow and the progression of ideas is clear.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'advertisement', 'utilize', and 'commitments'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'a experience' (should be 'experience') and 'enviornment' (should be 'environment'). Additionally, 'alternative days' is slightly ambiguous; 'every other day' would be more precise. While your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations would elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I have a experience', 'send time' (should be 'spend time'), and 'at anytime' (should be 'at any time'). The sentence 'I am looking for the opportunities where I can utilize my past skills' is well-structured. To improve, focus on article usage and verb-noun collocations. Most errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
