- explain when you will and will not be available
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
The purpose of my today's writing is to ask you if I can be of any help to you as advertised.
Initially, I was planning to go to my grandmother place which is located out of town 2 hours drive from Winnipeg for my summer vacation. However, she is not doing well so she will be living with us this summer as hospital is right next street. Hence, I'll be in the town for the summer.
I have two siblings, they both are older than me. therefore, there will be enough people to take care of my grandmother at my home. I'll get bored so I thought I can be your help in your household chores.
As a youngest child of the house, I have done most of the household work including cleaning, mild cooking etc. It will be a win-win situation for both us as I can pass my summer days while earning some penny and you'll get help as requested.
For the weekend, I'll take off as I have my summer swimming classes for 2 days and would like to spend the rest of the days with my grandmother. During the weekdays, I'm just a call away.
Kindly consider this email as a expression of interest for job you posted.
Thank You,
Hardik

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explained how you could help (household chores, cleaning, cooking), why you want the job (boredom, earning money), and your availability (weekdays available, weekends unavailable). The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbor, although it occasionally leans slightly informal. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the purpose of the letter is stated more naturally in the opening, as 'The purpose of my today's writing' is a bit mechanical and not typical of natural English correspondence.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Hence', and 'Therefore' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit forced or repetitive. For instance, the transition between the grandmother's situation and your availability could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be improved to create a more natural progression of ideas. Overall, the structure is easy to follow and the message is coherent.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. You use some good phrases like 'household chores' and 'expression of interest'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'earning some penny' (should be 'earning some money' or 'earning a little extra money') and 'be your help' (should be 'be of help to you'). While these errors do not impede communication, they highlight a need for more precise vocabulary usage. Expanding your range of idiomatic expressions or more sophisticated verbs would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'my grandmother place' (missing possessive 's'), 'as hospital is right next street' (missing articles), and 'as a youngest child' (incorrect article usage). Additionally, 'The purpose of my today's writing' is grammatically awkward. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on article usage (a/an/the) and consistent subject-verb agreement. Your control over punctuation is generally good, but watch for minor slips in sentence construction.
