Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I hope you are doing well. I saw your advertisement for the help in your home in next summer. It will be great for me if I could join you to help for a few hours a day. I am a really good cook and I can also look after your children. Since I have good experience to handle babies, it will give you plenty of free time.
I am a student and I am on a break for three months. It will be good for me to work near my home as I got to find that you live near by my house. It will save a lots of time to travel as I do not have a vehicle.
I am writing down my availabilities, I am available for forty hours per week from Monday to Friday. I hope it will for you, I will be waiting to hearing from your side .
Regards,
John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting how you can help, explaining your motivation, and detailing your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For example, when mentioning your experience with babies, you could have provided a specific example or mentioned a qualification to make your application more persuasive. The letter covers the requirements well enough to be functional, but adding more specific details would elevate the response to a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Since' and 'as' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally a bit mechanical. For instance, the transition between your skills and your availability could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow, which is a key requirement for this task.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'advertisement for the help' and 'look after your children' are functional. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'I got to find that you live near by my house' and 'waiting to hearing from your side'. These do not impede communication, but they show a limited range of natural collocations. To improve, focus on using more precise professional vocabulary suitable for a job inquiry.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'help in your home in next summer' (should be 'next summer'), 'experience to handle' (should be 'experience handling'), and 'save a lots of time' (should be 'save a lot of time'). These errors are frequent but do not prevent the reader from understanding your intent. Increasing your control over articles and prepositional phrases will help you achieve a higher score.
