Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mrs Barrett,

I am writing this letter to you as i saw your advertisement regarding you need somebody to help you at your home for next summer.

Actually , i am looking for a part time job from some time so i can help you in your household chores. I am a student holding classes at evening so i can come to your house in the morning and help you in numerous things such as preparing food , clean up and laundry .

As i mentioned above i am learner that is why i need part time work so that i can arrange my college fees for my further studies which i want to continue.

If i talk about my availability i can come in the morning for 4 to 5 hours from Monday to Friday as i need time for my studies on weekends so i am unable to come on Saturday and Sunday.

Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: suggesting help, explaining the motivation, and detailing availability. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a potential employer. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the list of chores ('preparing food, clean up and laundry') is functional but could be expanded to show more initiative. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the candidate maintains a consistent focus on the task requirements throughout the text.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the purpose of the letter to the specific offer of help, the motivation, and finally the availability. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'As i mentioned above' and 'If i talk about my availability', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the use of punctuation (such as the space before the comma in 'Actually ,') is inconsistent, which slightly affects the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their intentions clearly. There is some repetition of basic words like 'help' and 'come'. While the student attempts to use some relevant vocabulary ('household chores', 'advertisement', 'availability'), the range is somewhat limited. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication, but the lexical range does not demonstrate the flexibility or precision required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'i saw your advertisement regarding you need somebody' (should be 'regarding your need for someone') and 'i am learner' (missing article 'a'). Additionally, the capitalization of the pronoun 'I' is inconsistent throughout the text. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. The punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas.
