Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Mrs. Barrett,
I am writing in regard to your recent advertisement for someone to assist you around the house.
I am genuinely interested in lending you a helping hand next summer. I could help you with your daily household tasks, including laundry, cleaning, and grocery shopping. Additionally, I am passionate about gardening, thus, I could look after your plants.
This is a perfect opportunity to do something meaningful during my summer vacation. Moreover, it would allow me to earn a passive income that could help me with my college tuition. I'm a hardworking, responsible, and proactive person, and would not disappoint you.
I am quite flexible with the timing during the day. However, I am not available on Thursdays and Fridays due to some professional commitments. I would try my best to accommodate according to your schedule.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing back from you.
Yours sincerely,
Sarah Makkar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined how you could assist Mrs. Barrett, explained your motivation for the work, and provided specific details regarding your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, demonstrating a good understanding of the task requirements. You have maintained a consistent and professional persona throughout the letter, which is essential for this type of correspondence.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Additionally,' 'Moreover,' and 'However' effectively to link your sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent. The transition between your offer of help and your availability is smooth, ensuring the reader can easily navigate your request.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the context of a job inquiry. Phrases like 'genuinely interested,' 'proactive person,' and 'professional commitments' show a solid command of language. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to reach the highest band. Nevertheless, your word choice is precise and there are no errors that impede communication or cause confusion for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your writing displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, and your control over punctuation is strong. You have used modal verbs correctly ('could help,' 'would not disappoint') and maintained consistent tense usage. There are no significant grammatical errors that distract the reader. To improve further, you might experiment with a wider variety of complex sentence forms, such as using more conditional clauses or relative clauses to add depth to your descriptions.
