Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mrs. Barrett,
I came across your advertisement yesterday that you would like someone to aide you with your home. I am glad to say that I would like to volunteer. As a Social Service student my education has given me the knowledge to pursue the task. I could help you in your home with household tasks such as, cooking, maintaining the garden, and taking care of your pets.
As mentioned above, my education provides me with the credentials to pursue this work. So, before I start my career I want to give myself a chance to see where I stand. It would give me an opportunity to understand my strengths and weaknesses. This way I can improve and it is the first reason I would be obliged to help.
I could commence work on next Thursday. However, my availabilities will be Thursday to Monday. Tuesdays & Wednesdays I have to attend school in order to accomplish my studies.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Yours sincerely,
Sidd.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: suggesting how you can help, explaining your motivation, and clarifying your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention 'household tasks', providing a bit more detail on your experience with these specific chores would have strengthened your application. Additionally, the explanation of your availability is slightly confusing; you mention starting on 'next Thursday' but then list a range of 'Thursday to Monday', which could be clarified for the reader. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices like 'As mentioned above' and 'However' to transition between ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some of the transitions feel a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is more seamless. The use of paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall readability of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'advertisement', 'volunteer', 'credentials', and 'commence'. There are a few minor word choice errors, such as using 'aide' (a noun meaning a person) instead of 'assist' (a verb), and 'availabilities' which is typically used in the singular form in this context. Despite these minor inaccuracies, your meaning is always clear, and you successfully use vocabulary relevant to the topic of job applications and personal skills.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I came across your advertisement yesterday that you would like someone...' (which is slightly awkward phrasing) and 'my availabilities will be'. However, these errors do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation is generally good, and your sentence construction is clear. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the structure of complex sentences to sound more natural.
