Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mrs Barrett,
I am writing to enquire about the advertisement that you published on Times newspaper dated on 27th July, Saturday. I read that you require some household help for limited hours for a day in next summer.
I am Jane, who study in hospitality management in Southern University, Mohawk. I would like to invest my upcoming summer break to enhance my learning by putting it in working experience. I studied various house skills such as cleaning, organizing, even repairing too.
I will make sure that I will fulfill you needs in cooking some delicious dishes for your family as well. I gained an experience by attending short training course as a household help last month. Consequently, I have enclosed my certificate along with my resume.
I will be available all days for May, June, and July, but first and last Wednesday of month June, as I need to see my sister, who will visit the city with her family.
I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
Yours sincerely,
Jane Lopez

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You clearly outlined how you can help (cleaning, organizing, cooking), explained your motivation (gaining experience for your hospitality studies), and provided specific availability details. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your qualifications and constraints. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail on how your specific hospitality training would benefit Mrs. Barrett's household, but overall, the task is fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'consequently' and 'as well' to link sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between your studies and your household skills could be more fluid. Overall, the structure is clear and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'hospitality management', 'enquire', and 'certificate'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'put it in working experience' (should be 'gain work experience') and 'fulfill you needs' (should be 'fulfill your needs'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, some phrasing is slightly unnatural. To improve, focus on collocations—words that naturally go together—and ensure that your word choices are precise. The current range is sufficient to communicate your message clearly without difficulty.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am Jane, who study' (should be 'who studies'), 'dated on' (should be 'dated'), and 'in next summer' (should be 'next summer'). Additionally, there are minor issues with articles and prepositions, such as 'attending short training course' (should be 'a short training course'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, aim for more error-free sentences and ensure subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout your writing.
