Dear Mrs Barrett,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mrs Barrett ,
Hope this letters finds you well. I am writing this letter in response to your advertisement that you posted in the newspaper last week.
I rode that you need a professional chef next summer in your home for some occasion. I am a cook and I am available for the next summers. I can cook different types of local and international cuisines.
Currently, I am working as a head chef at Boston restaurant which is located in downtown Montreal. I would like to do this work because firstly, during next summers our restaurant will be close for the renovation and I will be free during this time. Moreover, I am doing part time study as well so I need the continue income to pay my living expenses.
In the upcoming summers I can start working with you from the first week of April up to the last week of July. Furthermore, I can work 8 hours by day starting from Monday to Friday but I can't be available on weekends.
For your assistance, I have attached my up to date resume for your reference. I hope to get prompt reply from your side.
Yours sincerely,
John abbot.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly explained how you could help (as a chef), why you want the work (renovation and financial need), and your specific availability (April to July, Monday to Friday). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a potential employer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your qualifications and constraints. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are accurate; for instance, you mentioned 'some occasion' in the second paragraph, which contradicts the advertisement's request for help 'a few hours a day' throughout the summer. Overall, the task is fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a formal closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas, which helps the flow of the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics. While the progression is generally smooth, some of the transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the connection between sentences is more natural. The referencing is clear, and the overall structure is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'renovation', 'international cuisines', and 'prompt reply'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'continue income' (should be 'continuous' or 'steady income') and '8 hours by day' (should be '8 hours a day'). You also have a few spelling errors like 'letters' instead of 'letter' and 'rode' instead of 'read'. While these do not impede communication, they prevent the score from being higher. Expanding your range of collocations and proofreading for small slips would improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Currently, I am working as a head chef at Boston restaurant which is located in downtown Montreal.' There are several grammatical errors, including 'Hope this letters finds you well' (missing subject 'this'), 'next summers' (should be 'next summer'), and 'our restaurant will be close' (should be 'closed'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though there are some spacing issues before commas. While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause difficulty for the reader. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help you achieve a higher band.
